Facebook Research Intern, 3D Computer Vision & State Estimation (PhD University Student) in Cork, Ireland

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR across the spectrum. The Surreal Vision research group at FRL is looking for the next generation of scientists and engineers to solve the research challenges on the path to building future machine perception enabled technologies. The aim of this internship project is to develop and advance computer vision algorithms and SW systems for real-time and offline SLAM, sensor fusion, structure from motion, visual odometry, sensor/display calibration, 3D reconstruction and relocalization.

Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Required Skills:

  1. Research, develop and prototype advanced tightly integrated hardware and software technologies in the domain of tracking, 3D reconstruction, localization, SFM, calibration automation etc.

  2. Analyze and improve efficiency, accuracy, scalability and stability of currently deployed systems

  3. Collaboration with and support of other researchers across various disciplines

  4. Communication of research agenda, progress and results

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship/co-op

  2. Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Computer Science, Computer Vision, Robotics or equivalent

  3. Experience in geometric computer vision, including tracking, SLAM, visual-inertial odometry, sensor/display calibration, large-scale structure from motion or relocalization technologies

  4. Knowledge with Mathematical and numerical optimization, linear algebra, probabilistic estimation and 3D geometry

  5. 2+ years C++ experience and modern C++ features

  6. Experience understanding, developing, and analyzing systems

  7. Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

  8. Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  9. Must be available for 3 month to 6 month internship between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with SLAM systems e.g. monocular, stereo, visual-inertial or RGBD

  2. Background in optics or computational imaging

  3. Experience working in a Linux environment

  4. Experience in GPU programming such as CUDA

  5. Broad understanding of the full machine vision pipeline from sensors to high-level algorithms

  6. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as CVPR, ECCV/ICCV, BMVC, or SIGGRAPH

  7. Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g. GitHub)
