VAL VERDE - COUNTY OF Community Advocate in DEL RIO, Texas

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Community Advocate will work to improve the quality of life in the community of Val Verde County by advocating for community members. They may work to ensure that everyone in their community has access to the resources and opportunity they need to succeed. The Community Advocate will facilitate positive change within the community by engaging with citizens, this includes advocating for improved access to resources and social issues. The Community Advocate role requires an outgoing, knowledgeable individual with a commitment to work with and advocate for community members. Works under the direction of the County Judge.

The Community Advocate will work with various local organizations to identify, evaluate and develop strategies to address the needs of the citizens of the community. They will also be responsible for researching potential resources available to the community, providing information to community members. The Community Advocate will also serve as a liaison between community members and local government, businesses and other organizations, ensuring that the needs of the community are addressed in a comprehensive and equitable manner. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in connecting members of the community to resources and services;
  2. Develop and maintain relationships with the different agencies; business within the County;
  3. Advocate for community members with various agencies, business, ect.;
  4. Develops and maintains resource for in person or call-in community members who have emergent needs;
  5. Assists community members with presenting issues, such as housing, finances and connect them with appropriate resources;
  6. Performs related work as required. (Position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties, which may be performed or supervised.)

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Minimal 1-year clerical work experience. Computer experience in word and excel. Able to communicate both in English and Spanish preferred. Excellent communication organization and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of local government and community organizations, ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, ability to work independently and as part of a team, knowledge of community resources and services and ability to develop and maintain relationships within the community. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED (General Equivalency Diploma). Physical Requirements: Lifting: Lift and move boxes of files, chairs and other equipment. Lift up to 25 lbs, ability to bend, lift file and record books. Travel: Local travel; valid Texas Operator's Driver's license. Shift work: N/A Other: Sitting, most of the time. Work required walking or standing to a significant degree.
