RES Commissioning Engineer Associate in Des Moines, Iowa
Description
The Associate Commissioning Engineer – BESS position will manage, and coordinate activities required for commissioning/start-up as well as warranty requirements for utility scale battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities. This entry-level role involves learning and contributing to commissioning processes, ensuring safe energization, and supporting documentation and warranty efforts.
Requirements:
Assists in the managing and overseeing of the site commissioning personnel or 3rd party suppliers, ensures construction testing and QA documentation is available and assembled into the turn-over document books for the commissioning stage.
Possesses verbal and written communication skills with the ability to learn and effectively share information within a team environment.
Displays proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook and Teams for effective communication, scheduling, data management, and collaboration within a team environment. Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Tracks site commissioning activities and reports to supervisor and client, document and close field issues as necessary.
Supports and ensures the safe energization of electrical equipment as per the energization procedure.
Manages and organizes the site commissioning manager or engineer’s tasks, deliverables, and activities.
Coordinates onsite plant commissioning and performance testing.
Coordinates and works with site commissioning personnel in the establishment of the Safety Tagging, Lockout & Work Permit Program and ensures compliance with its provisions.
Works with the Construction Manager or their designee to jointly develop the Punch List prior to the release of the system/equipment to Commissioning.
Manages the activities related to implementing project-specific commissioning plans and coordinates pre-commissioning activities handover documents.
Supports the field of Electrical, Mechanical, Instrument/Controls, SCADA Commissioning Specialists, and Vendor representatives in the scheduling, supervision, and performance of all commissioning, testing activities, and documentation.
Supports site turnover and O&M documentation for a client or an operation entity.
Supports Warranty requests for completed project sites.
Operates Company vehicle to oversee site operations.
Attends and completes required safety training and complies with safety rules and regulations.
Attends work regularly and punctually, and attends meetings as scheduled or expected.
Complies with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures
Presents, supports and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.
Follows safety and security procedures and determines appropriate action.
Reports potentially unsafe conditions and uses materials and equipment properly.
Understands and implements safety requirements as outlined by NFPA 70E.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering or 3+ years of real-world experience in commissioning utility-scale BESS required.
OSHA10 or higher required.
2+ years of electrical field experience within electrical construction projects required.
Valid Driver’s License required.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally 51-75% required.
2+ years’ experience with electrical utility scale commissioning personnel and activities preferred.
1+ year experience with battery storage or solar systems utility scale commissioning preferred.
NFPA70E certification preferred.
Outage planning and coordination review and oversight as outlined in NFPA 70E.
Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.
Familiarity with NERC guidelines and various ISO and TSO organization requirements is preferred.
Familiarity with DCS / SCADA control systems and methods for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems is preferred.
Ability to interpret and integrate contact documents preferred.
Ability to read and understand SLD, technical drawings and installation manuals.
Ability to assist in the development and interpretation of project schedules.
Intermediate level of knowledge in:
Utility-scale battery energy storage facility testing for EPC or Utilities in the United States is preferred.
DC systems architecture and testing.
Equipment commissioning and startup/energization experience preferred.
National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) standards, NESC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE/IES/API Standards preferred.
NETA and IEEE standards as related to utility-scale battery energy storage facilities. EMS systems, BMS systems, Inverters, Medium Voltage Transformers, MV and LV cabling, grounding, and BESS-specific component testing is preferred.
Organization, planning, decision-making, problem analyses, and leadership.
Commercial performance of Battery Storage System preferred.
Ability to obtain a valid, current passport to travel outside the U.S is preferred

Anticipated base salary range: $84,000 - $99,000
The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
