Essential functions (job duties):

The Director of Education Graduate Medical Education (GME) is a key leadership role in maintaining high-quality medical education standards by implementing and enhancing educational programs and promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement. This role focuses on evaluation and assessment of graduate medical education programs (i.e., residencies) with a focus on fostering a positive learning environment and wellness. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of GME and works collaboratively with all WSU School of Medicine (SOM) residency programs, including the residents, program leadership, faculty, program administrators, and the WSUSOM GME office.

Provide leadership in the design and implementation of educational programs that focus on milestones and competencies and collaborate with faculty to ensure that these are integrated into all teaching programs and documented according to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements.

Monitor residency programs for compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, particularly as these relate to the residents’ learning environment as well as resident and faculty wellness. If areas of concern are noted, develop plans to address these areas with collaboration with the Associate Dean of GME and other members of the GME office. If appropriate, the Director of Education will implement these interventions.

Create and implement the Annual Program Evaluation (APE) template, and work with residencies to correctly and accurately complete the tool, provide feedback and suggestions when appropriate. Once residencies complete their APE template, the Director of Education will work with program leadership to assess the final APE documents with a focus on continuous quality improvement.

Develop and evaluate educational resources for faculty and residents, including seminars that address resident and faculty development and wellness, DEI/implicit bias/culture of inclusion, web sites, computer base testing, and other resources as appropriate. In this capacity, the Director of Education will also provide support to residents and faculty members in their research endeavors.

Lead the research efforts of the GME office by identifying, conducting, and disseminating research outcomes via presentations at conferences and manuscript publication. The Director of Education is expected to publish 1-2 manuscripts per year in collaboration with the GME office.

Unique duties:

Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree

  • Masters or Doctoral Degree in medical education, evaluation, instructional design, curriculum development, or other related field of study from an accredited college/university.

    Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

  • Extensive work experience in a post-secondary health academic environment required, with a preference for prior experience in graduate medical education.

  • Experience working with standardized patient programs in healthcare setting is preferred.

  • Disability inclusion in medical education experience is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Business Acumen: Strong working knowledge of ACGME accreditation standards.

  • Communications: Possess excellent presentation and communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary. Ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds.

  • Planning and Organization: Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines. Strong organizational and time-management skills required. Maturity, sound judgment and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.

  • Writing Ability: Proficiency in manuscript preparation; proficiency with grant writing is preferred.

  • Technical skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel. Proficient in the analysis of data/statistical analysis.

  • Learning Agility: Independent and innovative self-starter who displays an ability to learn quickly and easily adapts to changing situations. Experience researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist.

  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the division and other units to gain full understanding of the project and desired outcome; ability to produce high quality and consistent results with assistance of team members; provide support to teammates when tackling complex projects.

  • Critical Thinking: Agile in ability to apply analytical and logical thinking to gather and analyze data.
