This Systems Engineering position is an engineering support role in the Tactical Space Systems Division at Northrop Grumman Space Systems located in Dulles, VA. The job responsibilities will be as an individual-contributor and deliverable/product lead within a multi-disciplinary engineering team. Successful candidate will perform traditional Systems Engineering functions, including requirements synthesis and flow-down, verification/validation planning, system trades study support, systems analysis, coordination of design efforts, and management of technical budgets & interface definitions. The application of these systems engineering tasks will be in the context of Computer Based Control Systems (CBCS) in Human Exploration and Operations (HEO), Space Logistics, and/or Deep Space missions .

The Staff Engineer will develop original ideas, elaborate on preliminary design concepts, evaluate completed designs with their program/functional supervisors and other technical groups, and make the necessary design modifications to achieve the best design within the program constraints. The candidate may also develop and coordinate the conduct of test programs required to evaluate design work.

Duties :

  • Evaluate design documentation and verification for compliance with customer and internally derived requirements

  • Evaluate design documentation to ensure manufacturability and application of previous lessons learned

  • Evaluate design documentation to provide evidence for requirement verification and hazard control verification closure

  • Support mission operation tasks for Launch, Phasing, Rendezvous, Departure, Secondary Activities, and Disposal / Reentry

  • Evaluate System Level test results and generation reports & review packages

  • Provide support to selected elements of the program Systems Engineering Team

  • Support and deliver SE Products and other deliverables, with a focus on mission success

  • Develop/implement and communicate solutions to routine Engineering problems

  • Contribute to the technical tasks supporting the program

  • Provide systems engineering support for technical reviews

  • Write status and technical performance reviews, analyses and reports

  • interaction with program, functional and customer leadership.

  • may include requirements flow down, tracking, verification, and the writing of specifications, interface control documents, and engineering reports from advanced studies, special engineering investigations, and similar activities.

  • may be called on to assist in new business activities, such as conceptual design and analysis for proposals and funded studies, and may include authoring sections for both.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 14+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 12+ years of experience; or a PhD and 9+ years of experience.

  • Experience with design and implementation of computer based control systems (CBCS), their avionics, and software and hardware integration of aerospace and/or military vehicles

  • Experience with architecture development

  • Familiarity with electrical & computer systems

  • Experience with spacecraft software design and implementation

  • Experience with Systems Engineering process

  • Understanding of spacecraft integration & test, launch, and mission operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) leadership experience

  • Familiarity with the design, development, integration, test, and operation of fault tolerant computing systems

  • Familiarity with VxWorks, Network Time Protocol (NTP), IPv4, protocol stack, Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE) in an aerospace and/or military vehicle context.

  • Experience defining requirements & interfaces

  • Experience developing verification documentation

  • Familiarity with command and telemetry database

  • Master’s degree in a technical discipline

Salary Range: $165,000 - $247,600

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
