Position may require the ability to: stand for majority of day; walk, bend, climb, crouch, kneel, stoop, see close/far; carry, lift, push and pull equipment, tools, parts of 50 lbs or more; operate a computer or other office equipment, with or without accommodation. Positions may assign, direct, and review the work of mechanics and other shop personnel in addition to performing mechanical work. May occasionally be required to work evenings, early mornings and/or weekends. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior to all customers, co-workers, and other members of the campus community. Customer Service skills and experience with outside vendors and the general public is preferred. Represents Facilities Management and the University in a positive way by maintaining a professional and neat appearance. Participates in team meetings and decisions within the work unit. Essential Functions: Maintains and Repairs Vehicles (50%) Inspects, repairs and adjusts automotive systems such as: fuel injection, electrical, exhaust, carburetor, hydraulic, and lubrication systems. Use various computerized equipment for diagnostics tests on automotive and other equipment. Replace, repair and adjust components to include: ignitions, brakes, brake pads, shoes, drums, rotors, hoses, lights, tires, tailgates, lifts, etc. Operates tools and equipment necessary to repair, replace, and overhaul equipment (drill press, hoists, jacks, compressors, lathes etc). Position drills, welds and grinds to modify and fabricate parts. Maintains and Repairs Large and Small Power Equipment (30%) Repairs and maintains motors and small engines and equipment: chain saws, trimmers, mowers, sprayers, blowers etc. Repairs and maintains a wide variety of power equipment such as: skid loaders, utility vehicles, ATVs, boats, snowmobiles, etc. Repairs and maintains equipment and vehicles for snow removal operations such as municipal plow trucks and salt/sand spreaders. Operates tools and equipment necessary to repair, replace, and overhaul equipment (drill press, hoists, jacks, compressors, lathes etc). Position drills, welds and grinds to modify and fabricate parts. Miscellaneous Responsibilities (20%) Operate all vehicles and equipment in order to test, diagnose, and evaluate. Disassemble and overhaul engines: automobiles, trucks, plow trucks, farm equipment (tractors, etc.). Overhaul, repair, service and assemble equipment similar to that used at UMD, including hydraulics and small engine repair. Know and follow safety procedures and policies in everyday work and use protective equipment as required. Perform special projects and other work-related duties as assigned. Provide estimates for the cost of vehicle repairs and maintenance. Order replacement parts and keep inventory. Keep maintenance records. Know and understand Department of transportation Inspection rules and record keeping needs Order and maintain records of parts, using a computerized work order system. Coordinates repair work done by outside vendors and arranges for transportation of vehicles. Qualifications Required/Essential Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, two years vocational education in automotive mechanics, and one year experience in diagnosing, repairing and maintaining vehicles and general equipment.
