Job Description

Responsible for Blue Cross NC's corporate insurance/risk management activities including coordination of insurance coverages, risk financing, and administering the risk management program on a day-to-day basis. This also includes managing and analyzing risk management data, conducting risk management educational programs, and complying with regulatory standards with the objective of controlling and minimizing loss to the Company. Represent the Finance Division as the subject matter expert on all initiatives impacting corporate insurance activities. Drive the identification of innovative strategies to steamline the insurance program and identify ways to reduce premium spend. Provide guidance to senior management on impactful decisions related to the corporate insurance program.

  • Responsible for all program components, including professional liability, general liability, workers' compensation, motor vehicle liability, property, directors and officers, fiduciary liability (ERISA), cyber, and crime coverages, and other programs as may be necessary and appropriate for the company.

  • As subject matter expert in corporate insurance and risk management, performs research and analyzes trends and drivers that may impact the organizations insurance program. Creates and distributes communications as needed on relevant insurance and risk transfer matters to organizational staff and management.

  • Leads the planning, coordination, and administration of a broad and comprehensive insurance program involving such activities as submitting insurance applications, insurance purchasing, insurance consulting, and coordinating claims handling for all insurance lines.

  • Leads the development and preparation of specifications for competitive bidding; negotiates with brokers, agents, or companies on insurance coverage, premiums, and services.

  • Utilizing broad expertise, reviews vendor arrangements to ensure business partners purchase and maintain adequate insurance coverage; evaluates requests from vendors seeking a waiver of typical contractual insurance requirements; recommends changes to vendor insurance requirements as needed.

  • Consults with Enterprise Risk Management and identifies current and emerging risks, evaluates risks for appropriate insurance coverage or risk transfer, and works within the organization to address non-insurance solutions.

  • In the event of a claim, supports the collection of data required by brokers, carriers, and legal counsel. This includes assessing loss runs for claim reserves and managing claim payment transition from organization’s retention to the carrier.

  • Leads discussions and other efforts to help all areas of management become increasingly self-sufficient in insurable risk management.

  • Makes recommendations to senior management for funding requirements and necessary limits of coverage.

  • Selects and utilizes services of consultants, brokers, carriers, etc.

  • Leads the evaluation of creative methods to reduce spend via alternative risk arrangements (self-insurance, captives, reduction of limits, etc.).

  • Acts as expert resource for the team, providing direction, assistance and training to less experienced staff members and may oversee or coordinate work efforts as needed.

Hiring Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, information systems or other relevant field and a minimum of 8 years risk management, auditing or enterprise business continuity consulting experience; OR

  • Master’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of experience as stated above.

  • Must have significant experience independently facilitating and conducting complex risk assessments with enterprise impacts.

  • Should have significant experience in at least one specialty area of risk management.

  • Project or program management experience required.

  • CPA or at least one certification relevant to specialty area (i.e. risk management, auditing, business continuity, IT security), excluding positions responsible for insurance placement risk management.

Hiring Preferences

  • Knowledge of enterprise business continuity concepts and methodologies, recognized industry standards, and professional practices.

  • Familiarity with Envision tool or other process diagramming tools, such as Microsoft Visio, preferred.

  • Familiarity with enterprise business continuity software preferred.

  • Strong knowledge base/expertise with internal control concepts, business/financial/IT processes and/or enterprise business continuity concepts/methodologies.

  • Must be able to work independently to carry out responsibilities with little guidance.

  • Excellent leadership, coaching and mentoring skills as well as the ability to work effectively with all levels of management, including senior leadership.

  • Excellent influencing and consultative skills; and the ability to proactively identify and resolve issues and opportunities.

  • Excellent facilitation skills necessary.

  • Excellent organizational skills which allow simultaneous completion of tasks and duties while maintaining the ability to coach and develop business partners in governance, risk, control, and business continuity concepts.

  • Excellent work coordination, planning, analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Commitment to excellent customer service.

  • Superior presentation skills including excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent PC skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project).
