Cornell Cooperative Extension Agriculture and Master Gardener Educator - E Aurora, NY in E Aurora, New York

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County has an opening for a part-time Ag and Master Gardener Educator working 12 hours per week from the E. Aurora, NY office.

Provide program support to the Agriculture and consumer Horticulture programs and facilitate the dissemination of agriculture and horticulture information to the residents of Erie County Assist in providing coordination for and communication to trained Association volunteers in horticulture, urban forestry, natural resources, and agriculture.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Associate’s or Equivalent Education. (GED/High School Diploma with one-year transferable program/functional experience may substitute).• Experience relevant to the role of the position • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.• Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.• Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.• Ability to organize, implement, and teach informal educational programs.• Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.• Demonstrated ability to be self-driven with excellent communication and organizational skills. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. • Demonstrated initiative, reliability, and dependability.• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff and communicate effectively with diverse audiences through accessible ways.• Demonstrated to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes including proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.• Proficiency with virtual communication platforms such as zoom or Microsoft Teams.• Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).• Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation.• Ability to perform physical labor in outdoor conditions including lifting 20 to 50lbs, with potential exposure to insects or inclement weather with or without accommodation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Demonstrated ability and familiarity with gardening/urban gardening issues, volunteer coordination, and/or community engagement.• Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.• Experience in teaching non-formal educational programs • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.• Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Program Delivery - 5%• Deliver high quality, existing educational programs and activities that address identified programming priorities. • Assist with teaching innovative, high-quality Horticulture, Natural Resource, Community Forestry, and Agriculture educational programs that address identified programming priorities. • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver programs.• Collaborate with community members and agencies as requested or required to facilitate programs and activities, such as community gardens, speaker engagements, community forestry events, tree plantings, invasive species surveys, general agriculture questions, etc.• Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.• Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Program Evaluation - 5%• Implement program evaluation as designed.• Assist with interacting with program participants, program committees, and other key stakeholders as identified to collect evaluation data. • Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.

Administrative Direction - 5%• Assist with development of marketing strategies, public affairs, and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.• Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.• Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.• Assist with the planning of the delivery of established educational program goals.• Assist Supervisor with planning and strategy development to strengthen and improve programs, as necessary. • May assist with financial direction of program to include planning for program expenses and budgets as well as financial resources for program continuance and enhancement.

Administrative Management - 5%• Assist with volunteer management to include: * Ensuring volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures. * Assist with recruitment of volunteers for the Master Gardener Program, CommuniTree Stewards and Cornell Climate Stewards.* Assist with screening and orientation training of Master Gardener Program, CommuniTree Stewards and Cornell Climate Stewards volunteers.* Assist with orientation of and guidance to Master Gardener Program, CommuniTree Stewards and Cornell Climate Stewards volunteers in accordance with established practices and procedures.• Assist with solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the Consumer Horticulture and Community Forestry program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with supervisor guidance as needed.• Assist with identifying, anticipating, recommending, and planning for Consumer Horticulture, Community Forestry and Agriculture program needs/supplies.• Assist Supervisor by performing administrative tasks in guiding the implementation of the program budget (i.e., track expenses, provide support for purchasing).• Assist with effectively managing program budget allocations.• Assist in identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association.

Administrative Coordination/Operation - 75%• Apply existing subject matter knowledge to compile and maintain teaching materials. • Coordinate, compile, and organize existing program resources and program materials.• Schedule volunteer events, meetings, programs, and training to foster contact and relationship building within Consumer Horticulture, Community Forestry volunteer base.• Participate in special projects including but not limited to volunteer training, county fair, fundraising, enrollment campaign, and other extension association activities, as assigned. • Organize and coordinate Consumer Horticulture, Community Forestry, and Agriculture activities and exhibits relating to county and/or state fair.• Coordinate and assist with special projects and outreach efforts as required by Supervisor.• Assist in maintaining communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to program newsletters, media releases, bulk mailings, social media accounts, media interviews, website postings to increase program visibility and to address issues.• Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of Consumer Horticulture, Community Forestry, and Agriculture programming through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational, and other organizations.• Provide administrative support for the coordination and implementation of multi-media efforts. • Track and record volunteer activity.• Assist with maintenance of the horticulture database.• Assist with program evaluation to include collecting evaluation and needs assessment data from program participants based on existing evaluation framework and guidelines.• Support coordination and execution of Consumer Horticulture fundraisers and events including plant sales, gardening sales, educational symposiums, and conferences. • Assist in the coordination and execution of Consumer Horticulture, Community Forestry, and Agriculture educational seminars and symposiums including venue reservation, scheduling registration, etc.• Maintain records and complete required reporting.• Accurately collect, prepare, and maintain paperwork, participant files and database as required by supervisor, Association, and funding source requirements.• Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed and/or maintained.• Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.• Actively participate in meetings, trainings and conference calls as required or as needed.• Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.• Transport self and/or program materials/resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%• In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.• Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.• Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local fairs, community activities, etc. • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned. • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
