Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Michigan State University Press Books/Acquisitions Division is seeking a coordinator to assist in tasks associated with the transmittal of book-length manuscripts from the acquisitions team to the press’s book production department. This part-time (either remote or in-office) position will assist authors in preparing and formatting their final manuscripts, including recording image and text permissions; assess digital images and citation formatting; manages checklists and transmittal forms; attend transmittal meetings; work closely with colleagues in the acquisitions and production department; attend editorial board meetings and taking minutes; and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist authors in formatting their final manuscripts

  • Checking pieces for art and permissions

  • Requesting missing materials

  • Monitoring contracts and checking rights statuses at transmittal

  • Communicating with editors, authors, acquisitions editors, and production staff at key points of the transmittal process and as needed

  • Managing transmittal checklists and forms

  • Attending quarterly editorial board meetings and taking minutes

    Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Word styles (paragraph and character styles)

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Excellent time management and task prioritization skills

  • Detail oriented with good problem-solving skills

  • University press publishing experience or related manuscript preparation experience

  • Some knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop a plus
