Position Summary
As a member of the Analysis Unit team, the AB Research Assistant role will primarily be to analyze AB data for the production of publications and presentations. The Research Assistant will sometimes directly author/co-author publications, but s/he will also provide backstopping support to others in the network by helping them “run numbers,” and plan and prepare slides and presentations. The research assistant will also assist the HoP with reviewing publications produced by others, provide analysis training and mentoring to Analysis Unit Research Assistants, as well as other AB staff and partners, and contribute to the development and design of new AB outputs.
The Research Assistant I will report to Afrobarometer Director of Analysis (DoA), and work closely with the Head of Publications (HoP), the Senior Analyst/Methodologist (SAM), Research Assistants (RAs) and interns, as well as the Director of Communications (DoC) and other members of the communications team, and senior AB management, especially when they are making presentations.
Working in close collaboration with other members of the Analysis Unit as well as the Communications Team, the Research Assistant I will be responsible for:
Serving as author/co-author on selected publications as assigned by the DoA, HoP or SAM.
Contributing to building a slide data bank for use in preparing presentations.
Running numbers and developing charts on selected topics as assigned.
Assisting other members of the network to prepare presentations through analyzing data and/or generating charts and slides, building presentation content and notes.
Producing “Rapid Response” press releases that respond to issues arising in the news that Afrobarometer data can speak to.
Assisting DoA, DoC, HoP and others in responding to special data analysis requests.
Training and mentoring new AB staff, partners, Research Assistants or interns in basic analysis using AB data, and building charts in AB style.
Preparing special deliverables for donors.
Contributing to development of AB “Signature Products,” including generating ideas for signature products, contributing to the development of content/layout/design, and production.
Developing infographics and other special content; managing AB Infographic of the Week series.
Making occasional presentations on behalf of AB.
Other tasks as requested by senior management .
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in social sciences, statistics, information sciences or a related field.
Working knowledge of French, Portuguese and/or Arabic.
Familiarity with other data analysis softwares such as R and Stata.
Familiarity with graphics softwares such as Infogram or Canva.
