Description and Responsibilities
The Occupational Therapist is a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides special education services to preschoolers with disabilities. The Occupational Therapist role includes the assessment, treatment planning, and provision of direct services to address the fine motor and sensory motor needs of individuals and groups, as well as consultation and evaluation as needed. This person provides therapy services according to individualized education programs (IEPs) in accordance with New York State regulations.
Responsibilities:
Plan and implement therapeutic occupational therapy services on an individual or group basis
Maintain contemporaneous session notes for all therapy sessions provided in accordance with student IEPs, per the guidance of the New York State Preschool/School Supportive Health Services Program (SSHSP)
Develop professional, positive, and productive relationships with children, families, agency staff, visitors, outside agencies, and the general public
Provide evaluations for children, including but not limited to fine motor skill level, posture, strength, sensory-motor development, motor planning ability, and developmentally appropriate activities of daily living skills
Act as a consultant for teachers and support staff regarding classroom occupational therapy intervention strategies for individual children, and also consult with staff regarding enhancement of fine motor/sensory motor development for those children not seen for treatment
Express a supportive and caring demeanor to relate sensitively to children, families, teaching staff, and multidisciplinary providers
Provide written documentation on students requiring therapeutic intervention, including assessment results, treatment goals, recommendations for present and future services, data tracking, and equipment justification documentation
Attend CPSE and/or CSE meetings to determine appropriate programming for children
Participate in team meetings concerning diagnostic and treatment needs of specific children
Provide regular feedback, information, and support for parents, including at minimum yearly conferences to discuss developmental progress
Review IEPs for all children on the caseload, and provide written updates for regular progress reporting and for annual reviews
Provide input for ordering and maintenance of materials and equipment utilized in therapy
Attend training/conferences for professional development and to meet continuing education requirements for licensure
Follow all State Education regulations and Elmcrest program policies and procedures, as well as ESM School District policies and procedures
Adhere to all scope of practice standards pertaining to the field of Occupational Therapy in New York State
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Early Education Program Administrator
Qualifications
Bachelor or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) certified school;
New York State Education Department Occupational Therapy License; New graduates of an Occupational Therapy program can be considered with licensure pending;
Experience with young children;
Team player able to work in a collaborative teaming environment;
Good attention to detail and organizational skills;
Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Integration, and developmental delays, and behavioral interventions preferred.
