Powell Industries, Inc. Senior Material Handler Shipping and Receiving in Edmonton, Alberta

Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton, (EDE) location, the Senior Material Handler/Packaging Specialist will report to the Logistics Supervisor. The Senior Material Handler/Packaging Specialist is responsible for various products and materials, including the receiving and handling of raw materials within the Powell Canada manufacturing process. This position assists Electricians, Integrators, Building Erectors, Material Handlers, and Lead persons.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Loading, unloading and unpacking all raw materials and related merchandise both indoors and outdoors.

  • Organizing, stacking and banding pallets for removal, communicating to lead for pick up.

  • Co-ordinate with Powell Shipping/receiving Material Handlers and Expeditors.

  • Communicate with Shipper/Receivers and Supply Chain for product returns

  • Perform physical movement of materials from one area to another using handcarts, forklifts, cranes or pallet Jacks.

  • Inspection of raw materials received in accordance with Powell specifications.

  • Marking of all raw materials by Powell standards.

  • Removes surplus material and product after tasks are complete and places back in storage or disposes in trash.

  • Deliver material to appropriate location or placing material on appropriate shelve, rack or bin within facility.

  • Parts pick up and delivery from the shipping cage.

  • Disposal of all packing/strapping material.

  • Assist with daily and weekly preventative maintenance of department equipment.

  • Assemble skids and crates, and pack goods to be shipped by EDE standards.

  • Assist in Ship Prep and Ship Loose activities.

  • Assist Lead Hands with training and mentoring other employees.

  • Promote a safety culture and attend all safety meetings.

  • Ensure quality by following standard work instructions and identifying any potential risks to product quality.

  • Conduct final packaging check for conformity of standards.

  • Other duties as required.

  • Ability to work with small hand tools and grinders.

  • Ability to read a tape measure (including conversations from fraction to decimal and/or metric to imperial.

  • Knowledge of raw materials and production processes.

  • Ability to properly identify material shapes (i.e. i-beam, wide flange beam, channel, HSS, pipe, tube, etc.)

  • Demonstrates a “can-do” attitude and a sense of urgency by collaborating with others to solve problems and drive results.

  • Approaches work consistently and utilize methods to complete and monitor tasks to meet deadlines.

    Qualifications

  • Minimum education level of a High School Diploma is required.

  • Minimum 5+ years of Shipping and Receiving experience.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Basic level computer skills in MS Office; including Excel experience.

  • Valid forklift certification and a minimum of 1-2 years’ or prior experience.

  • Overhead crane experience or certificate is considered an asset.

  • Valid CSTS 2020 certificate.

  • Due to the safety sensitive nature of this position successful candidates will undergo pre-employment testing.

    Working Conditions

  • Safety sensitive position in a temperature controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities.

  • Required to wear personnel protective equipment at all times (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses and respirators) when required.

  • Must be able to work from all type of ladders (step ladders, "A" frame ladders and all size extension ladders).

    Physical Requirements

  • Able to maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.

  • Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner continuously.

  • Continuous standing, walking 50-300 foot distances for long periods of time with only occasional sitting.

  • Able to frequently look over shoulders, work with both arms above shoulders and use both arms at full length frequently.

  • Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force continuously up to 50lbs.

  • Ability to use hand tools, such as: tin snips, hammer, and power tools (some vibrating), for long periods of time with frequent repetition.
