Position Summary

The Walworth County Sheriff's Office is looking for candidates like you to join our dedicated team of law enforcement professionals that pledge to preserve and enhance the quality of life within the community through efficient, effective, and professional law enforcement services. Although it is beneficial for us to hire candidates with prior law enforcement experience, we are always willing to hire good candidates entering the field and put them through a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Academy.

After field training, deputies with the Walworth County Sheriff's Office are assigned to one of three 8.25 hour shifts within the Patrol Division on a rotating schedule working 5 days on/2 days off, 5 days on/3 days off to provide 24-hour per day, 7-day per week service. The Sheriff's Office offers a robust training program with lots of opportunities for collateral duties such as substation assignment with deputy assigned take home squads, SWAT, Dive Team, Crowd Control, Honor Guard, FTO, Mobile Field Force, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The examples listed below are intended to be illustrative of the primary responsibilities of a Walworth County Deputy Sheriff. They are not all inclusive and do not restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

  • Investigate crimes and civil complaints.

  • Investigate vehicular accidents.

  • Enforce traffic laws, state statutes, and county ordinances.

  • Conduct business and residence checks during routine patrol.

  • Write and compile reports.

  • Testify in court as needed.

  • Transport prisoners to and from holding facilities, court, and other institutions.

  • Take into custody and provide services to mentally impaired and/or intoxicated individuals.

  • Restrain aggressive persons and apply handcuffs and other restraints without assistance from others.

  • Engage in physical altercations with or without equipment or weapons and have sufficient skills and training to overcome suspects and subdue them.

  • Walk and run distances under varying conditions, under normal and emergency response.

  • Operate a squad car in varying conditions, under normal and emergency response.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to county safety and risk management efforts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by 60 college-level credits, an Associate's degree, or two years of full-time law enforcement experience with current LESB certification.

  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old by the first day of employment - No age restriction applied for applicants who qualify for veteran's preference.

  • Felony convictions in any jurisdiction are disqualifying per LESB unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or completely pardoned.

  • Applicants must be able to serve as a credible witness in a court of law. Any applicant who receives a Brady letter, a Giglio letter, or who is on the Wisconsin Department of Justice "Brady List" will be disqualified.

  • Sworn Walworth County law enforcement employees must reside within the State of Wisconsin and within Walworth County, or the contiguous counties of Rock, Jefferson, Waukesha, Racine, or Kenosha upon completion of their probationary period and must continue to maintain residence therein so long as employed.

Selection Process

Applications will be considered on a continuous basis to fill current position openings. Candidates will complete the following:

Formal Walworth County electronic application.

Written exam with 70% minimum passing score.

Oral department interview.

Prior to being considered for a position, candidates will:

Complete Law Enforcement Suitability testing (pre-psychological, non-medical).

Submit to a thorough Background Investigation.

Complete a ride-along with a Field Training Officer.

Interview with the Sheriff and Undersheriff.

Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, a candidate will complete the following:

Post offer psychological evaluation.

Post offer physical (medical) examination including drug screen.

Law Enforcement Academy pre-acceptance physical fitness testing (candidates needing to attend law enforcement academy only).

WALWORTH COUNTY EMPLOYEE BENEFIT SUMMARY

F2 – Deputy Sheriff's Association Employees

BARGAINING UNIT: Deputy Sheriff's Association Employees Hired on or after January 1, 2012

DATE: January 1, 2019

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Twelve (12) months, beginning on the date you begin field training. During the probationary period your employment is "at-will". Upon successful completion of the probationary period you may appeal a suspension or discharge through the complaint process under §59.26(8) of the Wisconsin State Statutes.

BASIS OF PAYMENT: You are paid for actual hours worked plus pay for any accrued benefit time for which you are eligible. You are eligible for overtime or compensatory time for hours worked in excess of your regular schedule and in accordance with provisions of the collective bargaining unit.

VACATION: Accrued based on straight-time hours paid each pay period. You cannot use any vacation until you have completed your first anniversary year of employment. As a full-time employee you earn vacation equivalent to the following:

10 days per year after 1 year of Walworth County Service 15 days per year after 5 years of Walworth County Service 20 days per year after 10 years of Walworth County Service 25 days per year after 20 years of Walworth County Service

SICK LEAVE: Accrued based on straight-time hours paid each pay period. As a full-time employee (40 hours per week) you accrue 3.70 hours biweekly with unlimited accumulation. Subject to verification, accrued sick leave is available for your personal illness or medical appointments after completion of sixty (60) days of your probationary period. Up to 33 hours per year may be used for non-FMLA illness of your parent, spouse or dependent minor child.

HOLIDAYS: Ten paid holidays each year.

INSURANCE: Health, Dental, Life, Vision and Long Term Disability insurance benefits are available on the first of the month following 30 days of service, provided you complete enrollment forms within 30 days of hire.

Health Insurance: You can choose Tier 1 or Tier 2. Tier 1 is a standard co-pay plan. Tier 2 is a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The County will contribute an amount approved by the County Board, payable as a lump sum to your HSA for Tier 2. You may also elect to contribute to your HSA up to the IRS maximum. You may elect either family or single coverage. The monthly premium will be split between the County and the employee. The employee portion of the premium is 12% of the total cost of the plan. Upon completion of a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) by the employee (and spouse if covered by the Walworth County plan), the premium will be reduced to 10% of the total cost of the plan. Once the employee (and spouse if covered by the Walworth County plan) completes the education/counseling on their highest priority area recommended on their HRA, the premium will be reduced to 7% of the total cost of the plan. For newly hired employees hired after the annual health risk assessment has been offered, the premium will automatically be reduced to 7% for the remainder of the year.

Dental Insurance: You may elect either family or single coverage. The County pays 100% of the monthly premium.

Life Insurance: The County provides you with term life insurance in an amount equal to $100,000. The County will pay the premium for $25,000 worth of coverage. The balance of the premium will be deducted from your paycheck on a monthly basis. You have the option of purchasing additional coverage for your spouse and/or dependent children.

LTD Insurance: The County provides you with Long Term Disability Insurance. The monthly premium is 0.83% of your insured monthly wages. The County shall pay 25% of the premium & employee shall pay 75% of the premium.

Vision Insurance: You may elect to participate in Vision insurance. The employee electing coverage shall pay 100% (single or family) of the premium for vision insurance.

WISCONSIN RETIREMENT: You are covered under the Wisconsin Retirement System. The WRS provides you with separation, disability or retirement benefits upon termination. The employee required contribution rate for Protective Category Employees with Social Security hired after January 1, 2012 is the same as general category employees.

EDUCATION INCENTIVE: Available pursuant to contract.

CLOTHING ALLOWANCE: You will receive $1000.00 per year payable on a semi-annual basis for purchase or maintenance of uniforms and related items. After completing the probationary period, you are also eligible to receive up to a $1000 reimbursement once each five years for a bullet-proof vest.

TAX-SHELTERED BENEFITS: You may elect to participate in the following tax-sheltered benefits:

Deferred Compensation (S457 plan) Medical Spending Account (S125 plan)

Dependent Care Plan (S125 plan) Health Savings Account (S223 plan)

WORKERS COMPENSATION: You are covered by Workers Compensation for any illness or injury arising out of your employment. Medical expenses and compensation for lost time are paid from the workers' compensation plan. In addition, the County will supplement the workers' compensation lost-time payment for up to 1 year, making you whole on a "net-check" basis.

DIRECT DEPOSIT: You are required to participate in direct deposit of your paycheck to a banking institution of your choice.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: You and your family are encouraged to use the Employee Assistance Program for help in addressing confidential family and financial matters. EAP services are provided through Curalinc. Please call 888-881-5462 for help.

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: You will receive pay for up to 3 days for the purpose of bereavement over the death of your spouse, child, step-child, parent, step-parent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, or other member of the immediate household (excluding renters).

You will receive up to 1 day of pay for the death of your brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew.

JURY DUTY: Your regular wages will be made-whole for any time you are required to serve on jury duty.

MILITARY LEAVE: Your regular wages will be made-whole for up to two weeks for you to meet your annual two-week reserve duty obligation. Extended military leaves are provided in accordance with state and federal laws.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE: You are required to request a leave of absence in writing and a minimum of 15 calendar days prior to your expected absence. All leaves are subject to approval of the Human Resources Department and are at the discretion of the County's representative, except as otherwise required by law. Under emergency situations, the leave papers must be submitted within 5 days after the absence begins. Periods of absence less than 5 days may be approved by your department head.

UNION REPRESENTATION: You are represented by a certified collective bargaining unit. It is your choice to join or to not join the union. Regardless of your choice, under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement you are required to pay either union dues or a "fair-share" service fee. Management has no lawful right to enter into any private conversations with you for the purpose of "negotiating" your wages, hours or other terms and conditions of employment. Any concerns you may have on matters primarily related to wages, hours or conditions of employment must be addressed between the bargaining representatives of the union and the duly authorized bargaining representatives of the County.
