Department Summary

The Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management (SSEM) advances the University of Oregon's tradition of excellence by enrolling and retaining high-achieving scholars from Oregon, across the country, and around the world. We work on behalf of prospective students, current students, and their families through each phase of the enrollment process: the college search, admission, registration, financial aid, matriculation, transition, and onward to graduation. 

The Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management has responsibility for all communications with prospective students, current students, parents and families of current and prospective students, and other target audiences for the purposes of student recruitment and retention.

The University of Oregon is located in Eugene, Oregon, which is a diverse and eclectic city located in the southern end of the Willamette Valley. Position Summary

The Associate Director of Strategic Communications: Digital Communications and Strategy uses innovative communication strategies to contribute to the attainment of Student Services and Enrollment Management's short- and long-term goals, including enrollment, retention, graduation, community building, and development efforts. 

The Associate Director conceives, develops, implements, evaluates, and refines communication strategies to achieve maximum impact with target constituencies for the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management (SSEM), the Division of Student Life, and other permanent and ongoing partners with MOUs. This position provides strategy, content, creative direction, and project management for development, recruiting, and retention campaigns; manages project timelines and ensures deadlines are met by all professional staff; and makes day-to-day decisions with considerable independence, including those related to budgets.

Working collaboratively with external audiences, internal leadership, and team members, the Associate Director will make decisions that impact the future direction of the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing. These are critical responsibilities, as the recruitment and retention and student success goals of the Division of SSEM and the Division of Student Life are key to the success of the University of Oregon. Decisions also impact the ability of administrative, classified, and student staff to perform university work. This position represents the Divisions of SSEM and Student Life and, by extension, the university as a whole. The Associate Director will travel to represent the university at public events for recruitment, strategic communication, and development activities.  

The Associate Director of Strategic Communications: Digital Communications and Strategy reports to the Associate Vice President of SSEM/Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience.

• Five years of experience in marketing, public relations, CRM, or communications.  

• Experience supervising and developing professional staff.

Professional Competencies

• Advanced knowledge of marketing, communications, CRM (customer relationship management), and public relations.

• Excellent leadership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to analyze and develop marketing, public relations, and communication recommendations that support organizational priorities.

• Expertise in strategic communications, including print, e-mail, social media, digital mediums, and website strategies.

• Outstanding project management skills.

• Strong communication and creative skills, independent judgment, and the ability to interact with a wide range of people collaboratively.

• A commitment to service, specifically serving both internal and external constituents.

• Ability to support a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse institution.

• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when necessary.

• Skills in managing and directing creative teams in large, complex organizations, institutions, and/or brands.

• Strong passion for and knowledge of technology, emerging media, and digital communications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a closely related field.  

• Experience with social justice, diversity, and inclusion education and initiatives.

• Experience in developing communications to reach underrepresented communities. 

• Professional communication experience in a university or corporate setting in marketing or public relations.

• Eight or more years of comprehensive communication experience, including project management, budget planning, and implementation, as well as a background in print and digital publication and experience in multiple media, CRM, or communication channels.  

• Experience with web editing software or content management systems such as Drupal.

• Budget management experience, including project budget development and budget tracking for digital media, print media, ad campaigns, and other marketing. 

• Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style. 

• Experience with web CMS systems.
