Department Summary

The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is an ambitious initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and the world. The campus creates the intellectual infrastructure to establish Oregon as a center for both research and development, making Oregon a place where companies can start-up and grow. The Knight Campus is reshaping the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generations of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. The Knight Campus supports a dynamic externally sponsored research portfolio, a diverse set of graduate academic programming, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives and an active external affairs program.

The Knight Campus Papé Family Innovation Center is an incubator for research-based startups and technology development. Its location within University of Oregon’s state-of-the-art Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact facilitates generative interactions between UO academic research labs and commercially-oriented activity and personnel. More than simple lab space, the Innovation Center facilitates access to a wide range of resources and a community of entrepreneurial individuals building scalable research-based enterprises.

The Papé Family Innovation Center in Building 1 features 4,000+ sq. ft. of shared and private labs, meeting rooms and shared co-working space. Facilities include:

• Space for research equipment and tools

• Hoods, lockable storage furniture/refrigeration, benches, autoclaves/glass-washing.

• Printers, copier, desk space, lockable cabinets/drawers, and white boards

• 3 Conference/meeting rooms available for scheduling within the Innovation Center

Knight Campus Building 2, occupancy expected in early 2026, will double the Center’s space with four individual rental modules inclusive of wet lab, equipment, and office space, offering flexibility for different kinds of start-ups.

Position Summary

The Innovation Center Lab Manager (Manager) will have the primary responsibility of overseeing the laboratory spaces and compliance with environmental health and safety for the overall operations of the labs. The Manager will be responsible for lab-owned supplies and tools including but not limited to inventory and purchasing, maintenance, scheduling and in some cases training and fee-for-service use. The Manager will provide guidance and consultation to tenants on research and facility services available within the Knight Campus and the University; they will act as a liaison to Knight Campus facilities, University facility services, IT services, Environmental Health and Safety and other similar groups. The lab manager will be the Center’s Lab Safety Officer and integrate into the overall Knight Campus lab safety culture and be a member of the Research Lab Manager group. The lab manager will serve as a representative of the Center and the Knight Campus for tours, visitors, and other engagements as requested by the Knight Campus leadership team members.

Minimum Requirements

For the rank of Research Assistant or Research Engineer:

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, or related laboratory-based field.

• Three years of research experience as a technician, researcher, or trainee in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.

• Two years of oversight and/or maintenance of scientific tools/equipment in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.

For the rank of Research Associate

• Terminal degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, or related laboratory-based field.

• Three years of research experience as a technician, researcher, or trainee in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.

• Two years of oversight and/or maintenance of scientific tools/equipment in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

• Commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment.

• Experience in a start-up or growing biomedical company environment.

• Ability to develop productive partnerships with colleagues to create opportunities for innovation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Laboratory management experience.

• Laboratory Safety Officer experience.
