Department Summary

The English Department invites applicants for its open Pro Tem instructor and Pro Tem faculty pool, which we establish to have applications on file when openings become available.

Position Summary

Pro tem instructor appointees will have teaching and service duties related to teaching in the department of English. Teaching will be primarily at the undergraduate level but may involve assignment at the graduate level. The full-time course load is nine courses per year, three per term. Instructional needs would most likely be in lower-division argumentative writing. We may have occasional needs in film and media, lower-division literature courses (Introduction to Drama, Poetry, or Fiction, Shakespeare, British or American surveys), and folklore. Advising students in office hours and participation in program assessment as part of teaching duties are expectations of the appointments. Pro Tem faculty are not required but are welcome to participate in departmental service. Positions are for one year or less, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based on need and performance.

Minimum Requirements

• M.A. in English or a closely related field.

• Demonstrated successful college-level teaching experience appropriate to our needs and to our existing programs.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Applicants with training and experience teaching argumentative writing preferred.

• A Ph.D. in English to teach literature courses.
