In collaboration with the unit directors and nursing staff, the Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and patient outcomes. Incorporated within each of these role functions, the Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator is a role model, patient advocate, and change agent. The primary focus of this position is the advancement of expert nursing practice. The Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator utilizes the nursing process (Assessment, Planning, Intervention and Evaluation) as it applies to clinical practice, education, competency validation and program development. The Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator role models this process to staff members who provide direct care for patients. Through involvement in clinical consultation and direct patient care, the Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator assesses and improves the patient care process for these specialty patient populations. The Obstetrics Department Clinical Nurse Educator collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure that evidence-based practice is implemented and understood by the patient care staff.

Education Requirements • BSN Required • Masters in related field of nursing preferred Experience Requirements • Minimum of 5 years as a Registered Nurse in an Obstetrics Department setting • Must be currently licensed in the State of Virginia as a RN or have the ability to obtain licensure in VA within 60 days of hire • Respond innovatively to changing technologies, clinical practice guidelines and to changes in organizational structure and goals. ◦ Reports accurately portray pertinent information about staff education activities. ◦ Assists in determining compliance with regulatory requirements. • Communicates clinical and environmental issues which impact patient care and nursing practice to Nursing Administration. • Participates in Environment of Care rounds, quality reviews, and regulatory preparedness activities • Ensures the incorporation of research findings into evidence based practice.
