Description of Work Unit

As the laboratory school within the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, the CSU Early Childhood Center ( ECC ) serves a three-fold mission of teaching, research, and service.

  • Our teaching mission is to provide hands-on learning opportunities for CSU students interested in careers working with children and families.

  • Our research mission is to promote diverse opportunities for research related to children, families, and early childhood education.

  • Our service mission is to provide a high-quality, developmentally appropriate environment for young children in the context of our Reggio Emilia-inspired approach.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director assists the Director in operating the center in accordance with ECC policies and procedures, Colorado state licensing requirements, and NAEYC accreditation standards. This individual is responsible with the Director for all laboratory school operations, collaborates with the Director on a daily basis, and assumes all Director responsibilities and duties in the absence of the Director.

The Assistant Director provides general support to the ECC and demonstrates leadership by creating and maintaining a positive environment for children, families, college students, and ECC

staff. The Assistant Director is responsible for placing, mentoring, and supervising interns, practicum students, and student teachers at the ECC .

There are two openings, one is a 12-month position, and one is a 9-month position (August 16th through May 15th annually)

Required Job Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Early Childhood Education, Educational Leadership or related field, OR the combination of all of the following: a Bachelor’s Degree in directly related field, AND at least two years of administrative experience in Early Childhood Education, AND at least two years of experience in a Reggio Emilia or similar play based/constructivist setting.

  • Large Center Director Qualified by the State of Colorado or ability to obtain this Qualification.

  • Colorado Early Childhood Professional / PDIS level IV or above or ability to obtain this certification.

  • Previous experience in early childhood classrooms.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Colorado Coaching Credential or the ability to obtain this credential.

  • Trainer approval through the Early Childhood Trainer/Training Approval System of Colorado or the ability to obtain this approval.

  • Knowledge of and experience with the Reggio Emilia-philosophy of educating young children.

  • CPR /First Aid certification.

  • Knowledge of NAEYC accreditation process.

  • Knowledge of Early Childhood Licensing.

  • Experience in implementing inquiry-based curricula, with a focus on observation, reflection, and documentation.

  • Background or knowledge in behavioral and mental health in children

Duty/Responsibility

Provides general support to the ECC , including:

  • Daily staffing and scheduling of the classrooms, including mentor and classroom teachers, assistant teachers, and CSU student interns, practicums, student teachers, and volunteers.

  • Direct supervision of staff and ensuring building is secure at the end of each day.

  • Assisting in and accepting responsibility for daily center duties that might be temporary in the event other personnel are not available, including covering for teachers in the classroom.

  • Collection and submission of Colorado Department of Human Services ( CDHS ) background checks and CBI fingerprint card paperwork for all adults at the ECC .

  • Ensuring staff compliance with and implementation of ECC policies and procedures.

  • Keeping the Director informed of any necessary information regarding the care and safety of children.

  • Fulfilling all record-keeping responsibilities.

  • Attending and participating in all staff meetings and center events, as well as parent/teacher meetings as requested.

  • Conducting parent tours and providing interested families with information about the ECC .

  • Ordering/purchasing and maintaining inventory of school supplies and materials in collaboration with the Operations Manager.

  • Preparing and coordinating the Colorado Shines application and report.

  • Overseeing the Professional Development Information System ( PDIS ) of CDE .

  • Overseeing and maintaining Teaching Strategies Gold.

  • Overseeing the Freeberg Family Library and Parent Resource Center.

  • Serving on the ECC leadership team that reviews and implements programming and

program policies, assesses policy effectiveness, and develops or modifies operational

procedures (including. but not limited to, child care licensing, NAEYC Accreditation,

Colorado Shines, daily program events).

  • Ability to carry or lift loads up to 25 lbs.

  • Supporting Mentor Teachers in the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of interns, practicums, and student teachers.

  • Supporting staff members in the implementation and evaluation of Reggio Emilia-inspired practice in Early Childhood Education.

  • Supervising staff members with the implementation of ECC policies and procedures.

  • Supporting staff members in the implementation of developmentally appropriate

practice in Early Childhood Education.

  • Assisting teachers with the management of behavior problems and overall classroom

management and developing behavioral management plans when necessary.

  • Supporting Mentor and Classroom Teachers in preparing and conducting

parent/teacher conferences during fall and spring sessions.

  • Selecting, training, and supervising kitchen staff/Food Science Human Nutrition students.

  • Selecting and supervising intern and practicum students, student teachers, and other CSU students placed at the ECC .

  • Communicating with university supervisors from participating and interested units across campus.

  • Coordinating professional development and professional meetings for interns and

student teachers.

  • Maintaining accurate and comprehensive files/records for all existing student intern

and practicum students, student teachers, including documentation and confirmation of hours completed.
