Founded in 1870, Colorado State University ( CSU ) is a Carnegie research extensive land grant university dedicated to impactful research, teaching, and community service. With a budget of approximately $1.5 billion, CSU excels in various academic fields and is known for its commitment to sustainability, holding a Platinum STARS rating.

Facilities Management at CSU oversees more than 8,100,000 gross square feet of academic and administrative buildings, with an annual operating budget of $46 million and a recharge budget of $64 million. The department manages regular maintenance, utility infrastructure, purchased utilities, remodel and construction services, and oversees major construction projects totaling $775 million, with an additional $210 million pending.

Position Summary

Colorado State University seeks a highly qualified innovative leader for the role of Associate Vice President ( AVP ) of Facilities Operations (FO) The AVP of Facilities Operations, reports to the Vice President for University Operations and Chief Financial Officer. The AVP FO will co-lead the Facilities Management division with the Associate Vice President of Capital Planning and Programming. This role requires an experienced professional to manage a complex organization and collaborate with other high-level professionals within and outside the Division of University Operations.

Key Responsibilities of the Associate Vice President of Facilities Operations include:

  • Direct Operations Management, including building services, trades, logistics, customer service, district energy, utility services, and outdoor services.

  • Direct Remodel and Construction Services.

  • Direct Facilities Management Administration, including human resources, finance, and information technology.

This senior leadership position requires an accomplished professional dedicated to CSU’s facilities, operations and employees to support the university’s mission and goals. The position requires professional standards of high quality, responsiveness, the ability to simultaneously lead at an executive level and to directly engage in projects as needed. The AVP FO must effectively lead and manage the various components of facilities operations and co-lead with the Associate Vice President Capital Planning and Programming to successfully lead Colorado State University’s Facilities Management division. This position plays an integral role in the University’s pursuit of excellence in all programs, whether directly or indirectly related to its academic, research, service and outreach missions.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, construction management, engineering, sustainability, planning, public administration or related field

  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in complex facilities operations in one or more of the following areas: operations management including building services, district energy, utility services, and outdoor services; remodel and construction services; and managing facilities administration including human resources, finance, and information technology

  • Experience leading and managing large-scale facilities operations, including financial acumen (budgeting, financial management, and cost control), planning, and execution.

  • Experience managing, leading, and motivating large teams

  • Experience interacting with senior executives and stakeholders including briefing and presenting to executive leadership and oversight boards

  • Experience developing collaborative partnerships among diverse groups, both internal and external to the organization

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business administration, construction management, engineering, sustainability, planning, public administration, or related field

  • 15 years of progressively responsible experience in complex facilities operations in one or more of the following areas: operations management including building services, district energy, utility services, and outdoor services; remodel and construction services; and managing facilities administration including human resources, finance, and information technology

  • Senior leadership experience in a university or large complex organization of similar size and scope, including knowledge of higher education issues, policies, and procedures

  • Demonstrated experience in managing, leading, and motivating large teams, with a proven ability to drive change initiatives, implement new technologies, and improve processes

  • Knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations, building codes, and safety standards.

  • Additional certifications or licenses demonstrating commitment to continued education in relevant areas (examples: LEED or CEFP )
