Summary This position is located with the Sterile Processing Department at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. The primary purpose is to provide reprocessing of medical-surgical instruments, trays, etc. (decontamination and sterilization) for the inpatient units, outpatient clinics and the surgical suites. Responsibilities 07/30/2024: This position is being re-announced to solicit additional candidates. Rotate among the various duty assignments within the central sterile reprocessing department. Assignments include but not limited to decontamination; instrument preparation, including trays; equipment maintenance; removing damaged and non-usable instruments; issuing clean equipment and sterile trays. Decontaminate the full range of reusable medical supplies and equipment used within the hospital's units and clinics. Determines and uses the appropriate method for removing gross contamination. Disassembles and reassembles equipment where internal parts may become contaminated. Sterilize instruments, equipment, utensils, linen and supplies using various types of autoclaves and aerators. Autoclaves are loaded in a prescribed manner and controls are set to specified time and temperature according to material and requirements of the item being sterilized. Disassemble (where possible and following manufacturers' instructions) and clean equipment such as suction machines, healing/cooing machines, infusion pumps, etc. using approved disinfectants, detergents, and cleaners. Reassemble equipment after cleaning and operate to test for proper functioning. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. Individual Occupational Requirements: Experience: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. -OR- Education and Training: For GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as those shown above for GS-3. Successful completion of training provided through schools, hospitals, the military, or employee development programs of at least 20 classroom hours per week may be substituted for specialized experience on a week-for-week basis. Such training must have provided the knowledge and skills required to perform the work of the position, such as those described under specialized experience above. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-05: Applicant must have successfully completed 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterilized medical supplies and equipment. Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. For GS-3 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 6 months' experience required for GS-3; then deter-mine the applicant's education as a percentage of the l year of education that meets the requirements for GS-3. For GS-4 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 1 year of experience required for GS-4; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the 2 years of education that meets the requirements for GS-4. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
