Trinity Health Neuro Ophthalmology Assistant in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a physician, assists with coordination of neuro-visual patient care including neuro-ophthalmology procedures and health histories while rooming patients. Is also involved with registration, collection, processing and quality control of specimens, receives and instructs patients, processes lab orders and distributes laboratory reports.

What you will need:

  • Graduate of a CoA-OMP or CMA accredited program for Ophthalmic Technologists and two years of college education; OR graduate of a COA-OMP or CMA accredited program for Ophthalmic Technologists and two years of full-time work experience; OR 6,000 hours work experience (three years full time equivalent) as a COT under ophthalmologic supervision; OR 4,000 hours (two full years) as a CO or OCĀ©.

  • Preferred: Advanced courses in a specified medial area such as anatomy, physiology, biology, or Associate Degree in Health Sciences.

  • Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO). Preferred: Certified Orthoptist

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.

  • Preferred: Three-year experience as a direct patient care provider. Previous experience in the Neuroscience, Ophthalmology or Optometrist field(s). Business office experience.

What you will do:

  • Performs, measures and records neuro-ophthalmologic tests.

  • Coordinates clinical care in conjunction with physician, to a broad spectrum of patients with visual disturbance from optic nerve diseases, central nervous system disorders, ocular motility dysfunction, and pupillary abnormalities.

  • Administers ophthalmic drops according to Physician orders.

  • Troubleshoots all neuro-ophthalmology equipment, connectors and cabling.

  • Explains testing procedures to the patients and their families and offers specific education and counseling to patients regarding their condition and management plans.

  • Oversees the work performed by the Ophthalmic Technician Trainee/Assistant/Technician
