WSP USA Structural Engineer (Building Structures) in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

  • Responsible for the efficient and compliant delivery of all certain parts of the structural engineering design on the project, working with and reporting to the WSP Senior Engineer.

  • Interface, coordination across multi discipline teams within the project to ensure the clients technical requirements are met

  • contribute to client liaisons in relation to day-to-day structural engineering issues and with have design responsibility for parts of the structural design works.

  • responsible for advising the Senior Structural Engineer in administering the structural design aspects of the contract in a technical capacity.

  • responsible for day-to-day engineering design support and technical mentoring of the WSP Assistant and Graduate Engineers on equivalent junior structural technicians on the project.

  • production and reviewing technical aspects of the structural engineering design work, structural specifications design calculations and design packages in accordance with WSP Business Management Systems/protocols and Structural Technical Reference Manuals,

  • knowledge of REVIT Structure in a manner which the structural design produced by WSP structural software packages can be coordinated and integrated into WSP REVIT Structures models.

  • Developing drawing and sketching skills to be able to produce drawings to illustrate concept appraisals, feasibility studies and final design details.

  • Will be working towards ‘Chartered Engineer’ status and will have undertaken a formal training review with a relevant professional Institution, or, a suitably experienced WSP mentor;

  • If progressed through the ‘Apprentice route’ will have achieved ‘Incorporated Engineer’ status, or, as a minimum will be ‘EngTech’ qualified with a recognised Institution;

  • Demonstrates effective communication and inter-personal skills using written, oral and visual media.

  • Demonstrates ability in writing letters/emails, summaries and reports, both factual and interpretative. Able to prepare and deliver presentations, project précis or design concepts, etc.

  • knowledge of REVIT Structure in a manner which the structural design produced by WSP structural software packages can be coordinated and integrated into WSP REVIT Structures models.

  • Developing an ability to conceive approximate scheme solutions to assess the viability of alternative materials and forms of construction.

  • With supervision and guidance can solve structural engineering problems using a variety of suitable methods of analysis and media, including both traditional methods, using hand calculations, and computer analysis using proprietary software. Developing an understanding the of limitations of such techniques.

  • Developing the ability to prepare materials and workmanship specifications and design reports.

  • Demonstrates awareness of the relevant environmental and sustainability objectives, issues and legislation, and their influence on the design process and solutions adopted.

  • Developing experience in construction techniques, construction plant and machinery, temporary support systems, material testing procedures, construction programmes, construction sequencing, etc. Visits sites on one or more construction projects.

Organises design reviews at key project stages;

Developing experience of the role of hazard and risk assessments in avoiding or mitigating the potential risks posed by both construction materials and construction activities to site personnel, building users and the general public.

Demonstrates ability to manage and lead through the programming and control of appropriate resources in the delivery of a part of projects;

Developing experience in the technical delivery of project elements with a total/combined annual fee income of at least £25k per annum to time and budget

Ensures that any issues with potential to impact on programme and / or scope are identified and communicated internally;

Shares knowledge learnt during the delivery of projects to improve discipline efficiency and productivity;

Understands the scope of contract that is in operation and recognises the impact of any change to scope;

Demonstrates experience of ‘buddying’ at least one Graduate Engineer or Technician
