Position Summary:
The vision of the Landscaping and Grounds Department is to maintain a diverse and healthy landscape on the Greeley campus and to provide quality turf for athletic programs, and the campus. Our mission is characterized by providing the university community with campus aesthetics, passive recreation, safety, plant health, preservation and water conservation.
Plans, coordinates, and performs in a designated work zone. Performs duties to establish and maintain the formal, natural and desirable landscape features of the campus under the general expectations and established procedures identified by the Grounds Manager. These features include but are not limited to: lawns, gardens, trees, irrigation systems, hardscape, sports fields, naturalized areas and other outdoor areas on the campus as well as limited off campus locations.
Job Responsibilities:
Landscape Construction & Maintenance - 20%
Performs duties that include planting of grass (seed and sod), shrubs, trees and perennials; pruning of woody and herbaceous plant materials; seasonal maintenance of naturalized and formal landscapes; monitoring irrigation operation, and campus turf care.
Includes planting and care of both perennial and annual flower beds. General landscape maintenance to include mechanical and manual weed removal, clean up of limbs, leaf, graffiti and trash removal, curb and gutter maintenance.
Coordinate landscape renovation or repair projects with internal team members.
Projects include installation of edging, planting beds, rock, mulch, dry stacked walls, appurtenance installation, fencing, irrigation installation.
Work collaboratively with student seasonal and University Aides organizing work and guiding work efforts.
Support campus events and contractors on as needed basis.
Turf Maintenance - 20%
Performs turf mowing activities with various commercial mowing equipment to include, push, ride on and pulled mowing equipment and trimmers.
Relevant turf care activities: edging, aeration, top dressing and monitoring of plant condition.
Small area chemical and fertilizer application and documentation under the oversite of licensed chemical applicator.
Equipment Operation - 20%
Snow equipment: broom mounted tractors, mowers; truck mounted plows and sand spreaders.
Chainsaws tor small tree removal and pruning. Backpack blowers, edgers, string trimmers, bladed trimmers, rototillers, walk behind snow blowers.
Aerial lift truck operation for gutter cleanfng and tree pruning.
Landscaping and turf equipment: riding, pull behind, manual mowers and utility equipment.
Occasional heavy equipment operation to include forklift, tractor, backhoe, bucket truck, trencher and skid steer.
Irrigation Operation and Maintenance - 15%
Monitors zone watering needs, performs coverage tests and assists irrigation technician with programming/scheduling.
Monitors performance and effectiveness of irrigation in assigned zone and reports large scale problems to Irrigation Technician or manager.
Trouble shoots and repairs broken heads, lateral lines, and drip systems.
Assists Irrigation technician with mainline repairs, system installs and renovations.
Adjusts controllers on as needed basis for special events and activities.
Tree & Shrub Care/Maintenance - 7%
Performs necessary pruning, removals, planting, staking and mulching.
Performs pesticide and fertilizer applications under the oversite of licensed chemical applicator.
Performs winter watering, monitors irrigation performance to ensure plant vigor and survival.
Pesticide/Fertilizer Application - 2%
Performs the application of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides commonly used in landscape maintenance and in collaboration with licensed spray technician.
Utilizes hand sprayer, cyclone spreader, and utility vehicle mounted spreaders.
Documents all applications on a daily basis.
Complies with product labels and PPE requirements.
Snow Removal - 5%
Performs snow removal activities to include: hand shoveling of steps, ramps, narrow walkways, patios, and ADA access points.
Operates broom mounted mowers, tractors, truck mounted plows and spreaders, utility vehicle mounted plows and spreaders, snow blowers, backpack blowers, hand shovels and ice chipping equipment.
Employees are subject to emergency call backs and schedule adjustments to perform weather related work.
Sports Field Care - 2%
Assists sport field technician in all activities associated with sports field maintenance and game preparation activities.
Including but not limited to: field marking, mowing and infield grading, irrigation repair and operation, pesticide and fertilizer application and top dressing.
Assists with post game clean up.
Other Duties Included but not limited to: - 5%
Maintenance, organization and upkeep of common areas, garages, vehicles equipment, outdoor/indoor storage areas and yards. Inspection and cleaning of trench drains, outdoor stairwells, window wells, roof gutters, parking lots, signage, curbs and storm drains.
Assists in reporting damage of university property, reporting equipment malfunctions to mechanic, identifying potentially hazardous conditions and completing work orders for other departments.
Performs tasks that require lifting and opening of steel grates for access to utility wells and vaults.
Fence installation and repair.
Assist other departments as needed.
Participate in rotating call duty.
Record Keeping and Inventories - 1%
Maintains accurate and complete records on inventory (parts and supplies) and maintenance procedures when needed.
Documents irrigation schedules as needed, completes pesticide usage forms, equipment sign out forms, and closes out work orders.
Reports low inventories and equipment needs to Manager or his/her designee.
Completes equipment maintenance/repair tags.
Valid Drivers' License required.
