North Carolina Agriculture & Technical State Unive Extension Agent- Food Security Coordinator (Orange County) in Greensboro, North Carolina

The Orange County Food Security Coordinator spearheads efforts at both the County and community levels to enhance food access and implement food policy initiatives and practices in Orange County. This position entails administrative responsibilities, overseeing and coordinating the continuous planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive county-wide initiative. The primary goal is to tackle food insecurity and improve access, with the overarching aim of establishing an equitable, resilient, and sustainable food economy that enables residents to access affordable and nutritious food. The Coordinator collaborates closely with internal County and external community partners, playing a pivotal role in creating a Food Security Network and coordinating teams focused on collective action for food security initiatives. Furthermore, the Coordinator will contribute to the development and ongoing implementation of a food system assessment and plan programs and services tailored to Orange County’s needs.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Cooperative Extension at A&T provides researched-based educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences that address a diverse range of issues in four programmatic areas – Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development. Together with its partners – North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. In addition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Program has professionally staffed offices in almost half of the 100 counties in North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

This position will drive county and community-wide efforts around food access and food policy initiatives and practices in Orange County.

Requirements:

• Master’s degree from an accredited university in agricultural education, extension education, human services, food systems, food policy, communication, community development.

• Or Bachelor’s degree in a related field with five years of relevant experience with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in the major field of study (based on a 4.0 scale) with an understanding that a master’s degree will be pursued.

• Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to work and interact with diverse populations.

  • Skills in leadership, communication, networking, budgeting, and public relations.

  • Computer literacy (proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Office)

  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.

  • Valid Driver’s license and personal transportation.

  • Ability to travel and work after hours/weekends as needed.

  • Must be able to lift and carry training supplies and equipment needed for farm demonstrations and workshops.

Preferred:

• A minimum of five years of relevant experience.

• Experience planning programs and working in diverse communities.

• Experience working effectively as a team member.

• Ability to manage time and resources.

• Experience and knowledge in mass media, marketing, and presentations.

• Skills in leadership, budgeting, and public relations.

• Knowledge and background regarding food access and policy development.

• Strong organizational leadership and planning skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to develop and maintain positive, productive, and effective relationships and partnerships.

• Ability to expand funding opportunities for food security initiatives and projects.

• Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, workshops and discussions to bring diverse viewpoints together to work towards a common goal.

    This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
