The City of Henderson announces an examination to create an eligibility list and to fill one (1) vacancy for the classification of Fire Protection Engineer I/II in the Department of Building/Fire Safety and Development Services Center. *The department will consider and may hire a candidate who is qualified at any level in the series. The eligibility list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to one (1) year.

Under general supervision, plans, and performs engineering assessments, calculations, and research. Reviews complex construction documents for compliance with fire and specified building code provisions, Federal and State regulations, and local codes; and performs related duties as assigned.

This classification is distinguished as being the first in the Fire Protection Engineer series. The Fire Protection Engineer I (EIT) does not require registration as a Professional Engineer. Incumbents may be eligible to non-competitively advance to Fire Protection Engineer II when they are licensed as a Professional Engineer with the State of Nevada and all the requirements of the Fire Protection Engineer II position have been met and verified.

Fire Protection Engineer I (EIT) (Annual Salary Range: $ 77,918.43 - $116,877.65)

Fire Protection Engineer II (Annual Salary Range: $87,340.43 - $131,010.64)

Position Information:

  • The successful candidate's initial starting salary will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, and education, in addition to other internal considerations.

  • The City of Henderson is a part of the Nevada Public Employee Retirement Systems (NV PERS) and makes those PERS contributions on the employee's behalf. More information pertaining to NV PERS can be found here (https://www.nvpers.org/front) at the State of Nevada's PERS website

  • Standard working hours for this position will be Monday - Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

  • This position may be eligible for remote work up to two days per week; at least 50% of work time must be spent in-person onsite.

  • Work schedules and remote work opportunities are subject to change.

  • This option for remote work is only available for incumbents who have completed their probationary/qualifying period.

Salary placement for non-represented positions is based on a comprehensive compensation review and takes into consideration the candidate's qualifications as well as internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications

Fire Protection Engineer I (EIT) Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely-related field

  • Two (2) years of responsible, diversified experience related to the fire protection engineering field, or an equivalent combination of closely related training and experience

  • Must possess valid registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination at the time of application and the ability to obtain registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) within six (6) months of hire

  • Must have the ability to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Nevada

  • Most possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license as defined by NRS 483

    Fire Protection Engineer II Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience related to the fire protection engineering field

  • Must possess valid registration as a Professional Engineer with the State of Nevada at time of application, or the ability to obtain such registration through reciprocity within six (6) months of hire and as a condition of continued employment

  • Certifications:

  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Building Plans Examiner from the International Code Council (ICC) within two (2) years of hire and as a condition of continued employment

  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Fire Plans Examiner from the International Code Council (ICC) within two (2) years of hire and as a condition of continued employment

  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Fire Code Official within three (3) years of hire and as a condition of continued employment

  • Most possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license as defined by NRS 483

  • Desirable: Certification as a Fire Inspector II from the International Code Council (ICC)

  • Desirable: Experience as a fire plans examiner or fire protection engineer including design or plan review of complex fire alarm, sprinkler and smoke control systems, and hazardous materials
