About the Role:

The Director, Internal Communications oversees the internal communication function at the National Student Clearinghouse. This individual will be responsible for planning, developing, leading and executing a comprehensive internal communication strategy that fosters engagement, alignment and connection with employees across the organization. Reporting into the Chief People Officer within the People Experience and Solutions Division, they play a critical role in enhancing the employee experience, supporting organizational culture and aligning internal communication efforts with the Clearinghouse's business strategies. They manage multiple forms of employee communications and internal programs, creating and implementing new tools and methodology. They are critical in devising strategies and producing multimodal internal content to help align the organization's culture, goals, and brand to support and positively impact company culture and employee engagement.

Currently, this is a remote-first position, and this position may be required to periodically work on-site at our office and the frequency would depend on the department/division's requirements. Therefore, candidates must either reside within a reasonable distance to commute to our office or be willing to travel to our office in Herndon, when required.

Balances Stakeholders:

  • Identify and cultivate cross-functional relationships with multiplate stakeholders. Balance the needs of stakeholders without overcommitting and underdelivering, focusing on delivering value-added solutions and services.
  • Provide strategic communications solutions if an issue is identified. Demonstrate good judgement to determine which stakeholders are necessary.
  • Evaluate and utilize the best tools or platforms to create and share internal news/announcements with staff.
  • Provide counsel, develop speeches, and other internal communications messages for executives upon request.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Communications team to ensure internal communication messages are consistent and aligned with external communication messages in support of the organizational strategy and business priorities.
  • Plan, edit, and write content for a variety of internal communications channels, including the intranet, newsletter, emails, flyers, infographics, and Webex.
  • Support the Chief People Officer by reviewing/drafting presentations and providing info for business reviews, board meetings, etc. as needed.
  • Partner with teams across the business and provide communications counsel including communication plans for projects/initiatives.

Cu tivates Innovation:

  • Build and manage internal communication channels and other innovative ways to communicate with staff.
  • Oversee the intranet site and maintain its structure and governance.
  • Design and visually lay out content using graphic design tools (Adobe Creative Suite and online platforms).

Drives Vision and Purpose:

  • Execute consistent, accurate, high-quality work to help keep staff informed, engaged, and knowledgeable about the company's business strategy and goals.
  • Lead the internal communication response to crisis situations; coordinate efforts with other teams as needed on crisis communications including Legal, Information Security, and Corporate Communications.
  • Respond to feedback from staff and adjust messaging accordingly (e.g., staff and former staff posts on Glassdoor and similar sites).
  • Partner with the Organizational Change Management and Effectiveness Director to ensure effective strategies are implemented to support change across the enterprise.
  • Incorporate company's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy into Internal Communications strategy and work with DEI consultant to incorporate DEI into internal comms messaging.
  • Partner with the CEO to develop agenda and content for organizational events, such as All Hands Meetings, Town Halls, Voice of the Customer Meetings. Share content/recordings with employees after events.
  • Collaborate with HR and employee committees to promote internal Clearinghouse events and drive employee participation, ensuring strategic alignment.

Strategic Mindset:

  • Build and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy in conjunction with Clearinghouse Senior Leadership.
  • Define, analyze, and leverage performance metrics to measure the success of Internal Communication and further develop internal communication insights and strategy.
  • Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of communication strategies and tactics for continuous improvement, measured by qualitative and quantitative feedback.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple projects.
  • Oversee the Internal Communications Editorial Calendar and manage the flow and volume of communications to staff and help guide teams and executives on communication timing/planning.

Understanding the Business:

  • Establish a clear and consistent voice of the company and style/standard.
  • Ensure business priorities, organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to employees and stakeholders in an impactful and engaging way.
  • Translate complex information/ideas into relatable/understandable language for staff at all levels.
  • Continuously evaluate the organizational communication and its channels and their level of importance, frequency of use, and if they meet the needs of the organization and its strategy.
  • Ensure internal communications messages are consistent across all channels and for different departments of the organization and are consistent with Clearinghouse values and drivers.
  • Share information and involve others in decisions, when possible/necessary.
  • Work with Clearinghouse Senior leadership to drive workplace culture efforts.
