Associate Director, Research and Instruction

Description

The Associate Director, Research and Instruction is responsible for managing the planning, development, delivery, and assessment of UHCL Libraries’ research and instructional services and resources. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position serves as a member of the Libraries' Senior Leadership Team. The primary work location is Alfred R. Neumann Library; occasional travel to UHCL-Pearland Library is necessary and occasional evenings/weekends are required.

Duties:

  • Leads the Libraries' Research & Instruction department, supervising some full-time and part-time librarians.

  • Manages and participates in the Libraries’ instruction program, including coordinating faculty requests, developing new instruction sessions, and expanding the program.

  • Manages and participates in the Libraries’ research services, including both in-person and virtual research assistance.

  • Oversees the development and maintenance of library learning objects, including course and subject guides, videos, and LMS content.

  • Engages with the campus community (particularly faculty) to identify research and instruction needs and to develop services and resources to meet those needs.

  • Contributes to overall management of the UHCL Libraries as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

  • Serves on Libraries’ and University committees, task forces, and project teams as assigned.

  • Supports librarians in their professional development and growth and performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  1. ALA-Accredited Master’s degree in library science.

  2. Minimum four years of professional experience in reference and instruction in an academic library.

  3. Knowledge of current theory and best practices in library research services and information literacy.

  4. Knowledge of learning object creation and development as well as knowledge of relevant learning and instructional design theories.

  5. Skills in Microsoft Office.

  6. Highly developed teaching skills in a classroom or online setting.

  7. Skills creating text/image/video/audio content for learning objects.

  8. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally.

  9. Ability to work effectively in a collegial environment with staff and the public.

  10. Ability to coach and develop librarians in the delivery and assessment of instruction.

Desired:

Experience teaching librarian information literacy skills in a variety of settings, including virtual and face-to-face, group and individual instruction.

At least two years of supervisory experience.
