DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to join its Greenspace Management Division's Quality Assurance team.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various including, diesel-, electric- and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers, blowers, trimmers, edgers, generators, saws and other mechanical equipment used in utility work.
Installs mechanical equipment and components.
Repairs, refurbishes and maintains several types of pumps (i.e. hydraulic, oil, gas, diesel) and miscellaneous rotating and reciprocating equipment and machinery.
Operates vehicles to and from work sites.
Repairs and maintains equipment and parts.
Provides preventive maintenance to equipment, buildings, facilities, and systems.
Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work.
Maintains a preventive maintenance program within budget on all equipment, and purchases repair parts and replacement supplies.
Keeps a complete set of records for equipment and parts inventory purchases, equipment conditions, costs of repairs and preventive maintenance for all equipment.
Spot checks equipment for performance on the course, makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course, and services or supervises servicing of equipment prior to use.
Oversees the shop area maintenance.
Recommends equipment purchases and leases.
Coordinates, schedules, and monitors work assignments to ensure a safe environment.
This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices routines or techniques in a specific area or trade, which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of experience in building or mechanical maintenance are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid driver's license and must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2). May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
PREFERENCES
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
