MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Scientist - Molecular & Cellular Oncology in Houston, Texas

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology (MCO) advances basic, translational and clinical efforts to make MD Anderson the number one cancer research center.

The department's oncology-driven research focuses on fundamental mechanistic discoveries and their translation to humans. As a basic science department at MD Anderson, the department strives to enhance basic research excellence by establishing a robust research group focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of cancer research, particularly in signaling pathways and crosstalk between tumor and tumor microenvironment in tumor initiation, progression and metastasis, and resistance to various therapies. The department also hosts MD Anderson's Functional Genomics Core with the support of the Cancer Center Supporting Grant (CCSG). In addition, departmental faculty are core members of the Cancer Biology and Metastasis Program of CCSG, rated "exceptional" in the last competing renewal.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Conduct Experiments

  • Applies technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, supervise and carry out the research project.

  • Establish brain metastasis animal models .

  • Perform in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate the biology and mechanism of cancer metastasis, especially brain metastasis

  • Operate equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

  • Supervises the design, development or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

  • Plans and supervises the training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment and safety procedures.

Research and Analysis

  • Assist principal investigator in cancer biology and metastasis research for NCI and DoD scientific research projects; Lead the study of the role of CCL2 in brain metastasis. Investigate the role of SPHK1 in brain metastasis.

  • Study immune microenvironment of brain metastasis

  • Collect and analyze experimental research data

  • Develop techniques or approaches to work experimental problems

  • Compile, write and present project results to principal investigator, tutor trainees.

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs and participates in scientific research projects of summer students and graduate students.

  • Assigns and reviews work of students, determines specific goals or objectives to be attained, evaluates resulting research data and revises techniques or approaches to work out problems.

Administrative Support to PI

  • Work with PI in grant writing including drafting scientific plan, other required documents and grant progress reports

  • Compiles, writes and submits reports to superior.

  • Updated in current literatures related to the lab research project

  • Assist PI in scientific manuscript writing, defending and preparing scientific presentations

  • Assist PI in protocol management (IRB protocols, animal protocols and IBC protocols), including protocol creation, modification and renewal

  • Assist PI in lab operational issues.

Education

Required: Masters degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience

Required: Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
