DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Houston's Health Department is seeking a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Texas to perform the following duties:

  • Inspects various establishments or locations (i.e., swimming pools, wholesale, retail food establishments and schools) to detect possible health code violations.

  • Investigates community complaints of poor sanitation in public establishments or on private property; explains City health ordinances and recommends corrective action; performs follow-up inspections; issues warnings or citations.

  • Condemns unsafe food; quarantines equipment or facilities.

  • May act as a field trainer, lead or coordinate projects/programs within the Bureau.

  • May appear in court for testimony regarding violations; provides testimony in enforcement hearings.

  • May conduct in-service training for new employees. May conduct food mangers and food handler certification courses.

  • May be needed to assist in other programs of Consumer Health Services and the Department as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items such as manhole covers (up to 40 pounds) may be required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A Bachelor's degree, which includes 30 semester hours in basic or applied science courses, is required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

One (1) year of experience in a related environmental health field is required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

A State of Texas Sanitarian-in-training or Registered Sanitarian Certificate is required or proof of successful completion of registration exam.

A valid Texas driver license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving is required (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

SALARY INFORMATION- SPECIAL FUNDED

Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification
