Job Summary:

As a member of the Regulatory Compliance NERC Team, the Senior NERC Compliance Specialist provides essential support for NRG’s NERC Compliance Program under the direction of the Sr. Director Regulatory Compliance. This dynamic position involves assisting with the continuous improvement and execution of the program, conducting audits and assessments, and managing documentation and reporting. With opportunities for travel and collaboration with cross-functional teams, this role ensures adherence to regulatory standards while staying current with evolving requirements, ultimately contributing to the integrity and reliability of our plant operations.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

In addition to supporting the Regulatory Compliance NERC Team, you will be working with our engineering and plant operations personnel, which will involve travel to various power plants, primarily located within the ERCOT region, to assist in the performance of:

  • Assist with audits and assessments to ensure adherence to NERC standards, policies, and procedures

  • Analyze technical data to demonstrate compliance with NERC standards

  • Identify areas of non-compliance, conduct gap analyses, and recommend improvements in processes and controls

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of NERC compliance activities, audit findings, corrective actions, and regulatory communications

  • Participate in the NERC standards development process: Keep compliance managers, engineering, and plant personnel aware of current NERC standards and revisions

  • Stay abreast of evolving NERC regulations, standards, and guidelines

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, plant, and market operations, legal, construction, mergers, and acquisitions, to integrate NERC compliance considerations into strategic planning, project development, training, and operational processes

  • Assist with the preparation for NERC regional compliance audits and facilitate audit processes

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • Position location Houston, TX or Princeton, NJ (If Houston based, quarterly travel to Princeton, NJ office required initially)

  • Position is designated as hybrid, meaning three days per week in the office, two days per week remote

  • Open office environment

  • Periodic travel required (20%)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in power plant operations (e.g., electrical systems, instrument and control systems, maintenance, etc.)

  • Two years of experience with NERC compliance programs

  • In-depth understanding of NERC Operations and Planning (O&P) standards, regulations, and compliance requirements. Familiarity with ERCOT regional standards a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct audits, assessments, and gap analyses to identify areas of non-compliance and recommend corrective actions

  • Proven ability to stay current with evolving regulatory changes, NERC standards, and guidelines

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proactive, analytical self-manager with critical thinking skills and keen judgment

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with all levels of internal or external groups

  • Strong people skills and ability to work in both team environments and independently

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams

  • Excellent attention to detail, highly organized with an initiative-taking approach. Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

  • Strong analytical ability and critical thinking skills

  • Experience navigating NERC tools (e.g., the ERO Portal, Aligne, and the Secure Evidence Locker) is a plus

  • Experience with Assurx’s CATSWeb tool is a plus
