DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Utilizes troubleshooting skills to address water utility operations and maintenance. Performs maintenance tasks related to the operation of the water distribution system. Isolates water lines by operating valves and reviewing GEOLINKS to determine valve locations. It may also include operating valves and flushing hydrants to address water quality issues. Renews utility services to designated areas. Communicate and coordinate work with other technicians and support personnel by telephone, text, or email. This position may operate general equipment or perform tasks that do not require specialized licenses such as repairing and maintaining valves, hydrants, and maintenance of facilities. Inspect work sites, use trucks and equipment to transport equipment tools and materials to work locations. This position will prepare and maintain reports, forms, and records for operational assignments. Utilize a data tracking system to assist with service calls and water maintenance repairs. May perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the equipment/instruments.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of general maintenance/work experience are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCES
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
