Job Title: Fisheries Technician South Fork Snake River (8 Months; Benefitted)

Job Introduction:

The Upper Snake Region is seeking one temporary Lead Fisheries Technician (\$17.32/hr. DOE; benefitted). The Upper Snake Region Office islocated in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Fisheries Technicians for the South Fork Snake Project will focus on research, monitoring, and management of the trout populations in the world-famous South Fork Snake River.This position requires working independently and(or) alongside biologists. This position will serve as an integral member of a team working to conserve a core population of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout and monitor many other fish species during the 2025 field season from mid-April to mid-December. Office and laboratory duties will continue into the winter. Interested candidates can apply from 12/26/2024 to 2/16/2025, but the announcement may close sooner if a candidate is selected.

General Information:

This position requires extensive use of boats on large rivers and lakes, and wading in cold, swift streams. Travel within the IDFG Upper Snake Region southeast Idaho is typically daily but may extend for periods of up to eight (8) days to conduct fish sampling fieldwork in remote sections of Idaho.The incumbent will work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Incumbents must be able to work and camp in extreme weather conditions, hike long distances (\>9 mi.) in rough terrain,operate ATVs and four (4) wheel drive vehicles in steep/rough terrain, and lift/carry equipment up to50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations. Camping equipment, food and beverages, and transportation are provided to and from field sites.

Responsibilities:

Duties will include electrofishing streams, rivers, and lakes; backpacking; maintaining weirs, fish traps, and PIT tag arrays; gill netting alpine lakes; stocking fish, maintaining and repairing equipment (sampling equipment, vehicles, etc.); tagging fish; and collecting, recording, and managing data.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications require the incumbent has some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of fish species. Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; identifying various fish species; operating a boat and outboard motor; and diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems. Candidates must have a valid driver\'s license.

Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to a B.S. degree in fisheries, biology, ecology, or a related field, or equivalent in training and work experience, experience with data management and sampling fish, experience leading crews and working independently. EEO/Vet pref employer.
