Performs skilled operation of a wide variety of construction, maintenance equipment, and motorized wheeled vehicles including commercial trucks and tractors exceeding 25,000 lbs. to support utility construction, general excavation including sensitive work around gas, electric, sewer and water lines, and snow plowing. In addition, performs manual labor which includes shoveling, catch basin cleaning, tamping, litter control, etc. Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape equipment or facilities.


Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow and utility related emergencies. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and

cold for extended periods. May come in contact with sewage and dead animals. Regular exposure to bees and pollen.


This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement. At the end of the probationary period employees will be required to pay union dues per article 1 of the agreement. Starting base pay for an S09 is $26.02/hr.


This position's working hours are Tuesday thru Friday 2pm to 10:30pm and Saturday 7am to 2:30 pm

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years' experience with landscape maintenance, underground utility construction and related equipment operation, to include a minimum of five years' experience operating heavy motorized construction and snowplow equipment (exceeding 25,000 lbs.).
  • Previous working experience reading plan specifications and construction blueprints.
  • Experience planning and coordinating work crews required.
  • Will be required to obtain NYS pesticide applicator's license within 3 years.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate your personal motor vehicle to travel to/from job sites.
  • CDLA restricted license required or must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Motivation to learn and take initiative to be proactive.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgement and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training in heavy equipment operation, and/or construction technologies helpful.
  • Experience working around existing in-ground utilities.
  • Strong interpersonal (oral and written) skills in order to interact with a diverse range of people.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
  • Field and/or certifications.
