Technician I, Simmons Lab - CVM

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a technician to join the Simmons Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The Simmons Laboratory utilizes various cancer models (including breast, ovarian, renal and lung) to study the role that lipids and inflammation play in the development of cancer. This Technician I will support the research in the lab by ensuring common lab equipment, supplies and reagents are maintained in good working order. This individual will also assist lab personnel in carrying out basic molecular assays (immunoblotting, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), bicinchoninic acid assays (BCA)

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare instruments and standard buffers, reagents and media following established protocols.
  • Assist with relatively non-complex assays including immunoblotting, ELIZA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay), BCA (bicinchoninic acid assays
  • Maintain laboratory records of purchases in a database as directed by the PI
  • Purchasing of standard laboratory reagents and supplies
  • Ensure the lab is appropriately stocked of reagents and supplies based on usage
  • Regular inspection and upkeep of common laboratory equipment
  • Maintain the lab in good working order.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, and up to 1-year relevant experience in coursework or laboratory experience in molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry or equivalent combination.
  • Position requires successful completion of Cornell training courses (i.e. animal use, radioisotope training, and chemical safety).

  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment, perform repetitive tasks with close attention to detail, and adhere to concurrent deadlines regularly.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, and commitment to experimental goals
  • Competent computer skills (MS Office, email, internet searches, and data analysis programs)

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
  • This position is 39 hours per week, with some weekend hours required on occasion.
