Description of Work

This position is located in the Johnston County Maintenance Unit. Employee will be responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of all work activities and materials and equipment needs for one or more crews in the most complex transportation maintenance work covering the maintenance and repair of State maintained roads. Work will include, but is not limited to, working in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment; ability to climb, bend, and traverse steep and uneven terrain; ability to work in extreme temperature conditions; ability to work with power tools to perform pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal, and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Employee will be responsible for maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records, planning work operations and adjusting work assignments, training employees on-the-job, conducting performance reviews, assisting with interviewing, and recommending new staff. Employee will be responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required and must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments, and complex work assignments. Other responsibilities include budgeting, documenting expenditures for multiple crews, using the Maintenance Management System (MMS) to assign task numbers and to compare actual cost with established guidelines, and aid Engineer by analyzing expenditures and altering work crew assignment to maintain fiscal responsibilities. Employee must utilize NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment, following OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in planning and organizing work.

  • Experience in filling out daily work sheets that documents personnel, equipment and location worked.

  • Experience in calculating quantities of material needed for work crews to perform daily functions.

  • Experience in supervising a crew or crews.

    Additional Expectations:

Direct, assist, and train subordinate employees. Selected applicant will be expected to calculate quantities of material needed or work performed by performing math skills. Must be able to perform cost estimates for budget needs. Selected applicant will make field investigations on unlevel terrain. Maintain accurate records of work accomplished. Selected applicant will supervise maintenance program implementation and monitor work operation to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Must supervise and evaluate performance of other employees and be able to communicate, establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, management, and the general public. Selected applicant is expected to work in extreme temperatures and uneven terrain conditions for extended periods of time. Must be able respond and work in emergency call situations and inclement weather. Safety toe shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
