A.T. Still University's College of Graduate Health Studies is seeking an exempt assistant professor of health professions education. This position will engage in health professions education instruction with a commitment to excellence in teaching, service to the health professions education programs, College and University, and research that is collaborative, inclusive, and aligns with the mission of the University. This position will serve as a faculty instructor in the health professions education program's core courses and culminating project courses focused on the planning, design, implementation, and analysis of health professions education related research. The assistant professor will emphasize creating an inclusive learning environment that supports diverse perspectives and promotes equity while also being an active, engaging, and inclusive member of the health professions education programs, fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff. This position will serve as the department lead in data analysis and advise/support fellow faculty in this area of instruction.

Major Job Duties

  • Develop and teach online courses in the health professions education programs as assigned by the program chair, with a focus on creating inclusive and accessible course content that accommodates diverse learning needs.
  • Support faculty and students in doctoral research project planning, design, implementation, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, reporting, and discussion of research findings.
  • Provide expertise in interprofessional education (IPE) and/or teaching with simulation.
  • Assist students in preparing scientific articles of doctoral research projects for publication in industry-respected health professions education-related scholarly journals, with an emphasis on incorporating diverse perspectives and promoting equity in research.
  • Advise fellow faculty in data analysis techniques and methodologies.
  • Conduct professional scholarship and service as appropriate, prioritizing activities that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the field.
  • Serve on program, college, and university committees as assigned.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers and academic advisors in the development and delivery of courses, ensuring that course design and delivery practices are inclusive and equitable.
  • Interact in a collegial manner with everyone in the ATSU community, fostering an inclusive and respectful environment.
  • Other duties as assigned by the program, dean, associate dean, or other institutional administration.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teaching, developing and updating online courses, including facilitating student learning through regular interaction (synchronous and asynchronous) with diverse student populations, developing and leading discussions by providing content expertise, grading and providing feedback for assignments, and communicating any student concerns to the program chair.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using the online learning management system, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in course materials.
  • Incorporate diverse perspectives and promote equity in the curriculum.
  • Serve on program, college, and university committees as assigned.
  • Engage in professional scholarship and service, prioritizing activities that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the field.
  • Advise fellow faculty in data analysis techniques and methodologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the program chair, Dean, Associate Dean, or other institutional administrators.
  • Provide additional expertise in interprofessional education (IPE) and/or teaching with simulation.
  • Demonstrate positive interactions with students in an online learning setting, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Work independently, and possess excellent written and verb l communication skills.
  • Engage in collaborative instruction that aligns with the mission of the College of Graduate Health Studies, provide a learning environment that encourages and supports student success, and maintain frequent communication and interaction among students.
  • Provide timely and meaningful formative and summative feedback to students, respond to students inquiries within 48 hours, and ensure high-speed internet connectivity at all times.

Education/Experience

  • Doctoral degree and/or PhD.
  • Clinical background preferred.
  • Applicants must have a doctorate degree with at least 18 credit hours in higher education curriculum and instruction and at least two years of online teaching experience in higher education.
  • Experience teaching health professions education and research methods, conducting primary research, and a history of peer-reviewed publications and/or professional presentations (poster, juried, invited, symposia, etc.) related to health professions education.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in higher education and/or distance education environments, with a demonstrated commitment to teaching diverse student populations, including those from underrepresented and marginalized groups.
  • At least 2 years of experience in online course development is required, with an emphasis on creating inclusive and accessible learning materials that accommodate diverse learning needs and styles.
  • Proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis methods is essential, along with experience in using SPSS and qualitative data analysis software.
  • Candidates must show a commitment to incorporating diverse perspectives and methodologies in their research and be capable of advising fellow faculty in data analysis.
  • A thorough knowledge of instructional design and methodology specific to distance learning and adult education is required.
  • Applicants should have experience developing curricula that reflect diverse viewpoints and promote an inclusive learning environment.
  • Formal education in the discipline of higher education curriculum and instruction is required, with a doctorate degree and at least 18 credit hours in higher education curriculum and instruction, and a minimum of two years of online teaching experience in higher education.
  • Coursework or professional development in DEI-related topics is highly desirable.
  • Additional expertise in interprofessional education (IPE) and/or teaching with simulation is preferred.
  • Preferred qualifications include a clinical background and experience in teaching health professions education and research methods.
  • Conducting primary research, particularly with a focus on health disparities, social determinants of health, or other DEI-related topics, is highly valued.
  • A history of professional presentations (poster, juried, invited, symposia, etc.) and/or peer-reviewed publications related to health professions education, especially those addressing DEI issues, is preferred.

Skills

Applicants must be highly skilled in qualitative and quantitative data analysis and research, as well as educational technology, such as course delivery systems (e.g., Canvas).

They should possess strong skills in interacting positively with diverse student populations at a post-graduate level, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Expertise in the development and implementation of instructional media for teaching courses is essential.
