Description
A.T. Still University's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) is seeking a non-exempt Licensed Practical Nurse on the Kirksville, Missouri, campus. This position will assist physicians in all modes of practice and patient care, functions as a physician/patient liaison, and assists in the educational component in the Family Medicine Residency program.
Major Job Duties
- Assist physicians in patient care to include patient history, vital signs, in-house labs (Hemoccult, pregnancy, urine, mono, strep, etc), venipuncture, order tests and procedures, and call the pharmacy for prescriptions and refills.
- Fulfill insurance pre-certification requirements if needed.
- Provide patient education as directed per the physician.
- Inform patient of test results, appointment plans, referrals and needed follow-up.
- Review charts and triage calls.
- Assist with examintions, minor surgeries, setup and assist with procedures and review medication lists.
- Document nurse care assessments, scrips, education, etc on patient chart.
- Frequent procedures include spirometry, EKG's, colposcopy, joint injections, surgical procedures, cryotherapy and wound dressing.
- Keep schedule of allergy injections and keep medications ordered.
- Perform PT/INR's for monitoring medications.
- Train and work with Residents on nursing responsibilities and duties.
- Maintain pharmacy area and keep sample medications stocked and sample log current.
- Autoclave instruments and keep laboratory area stocked and cleaned.
- Keep supplies organized.
- Research cost of stock items.
- Check pharmacy samples for dates.
- Order stock medications.
- Order laboratory supplies, specimen cups, syringes, needles, etc.
- Thoroughly clean and stock treatment rooms.
- Obtain some supplies from Wal-Mart if cheaper.
- Wheelchair transport of patients to radiology procedures or ER if necessary.
- Pickup and return x-rays.
- Clean and organize medical chart room.
- Keep various website logins and passwords current.
Education/Training
- LPN license.
- CRP certification and possess knowledge that goes with that license and certification.
- 3-6 months of experience preferred.
- Experience in outpatient clinic settings with a large physician group would be ideal.
- Experience with obstetrics, pediatrics, family medicine including surgical assist, patient assessment, wound care, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
Skills
- Venipuncture, EKG, spirometry, injections, sterile technique, nebulizer administration.
- Communication skills.
- Proper telephone etiquette.
- Operation of medical and office equipment.
- Possess skills as an educator for patient education requirements in the Residency Program.
