Our Civil Engineering team is seeking a full-time Civil Engineering Intern – Summer 2025 to work out of our Holland, MI office. The following locations will also be considered: Lansing, MI . This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.
This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 19th, 2025. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.
Your Impact
Support a variety of engineering tasks for primarily Solid Waste clients with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
Learn basic principles of Civil, Environmental, and Geotechnical Engineering.
Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
Complete training on assigned tasks.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Long work hours in the field or in the office may be necessary during Michigan’s construction season, including on Saturdays. Weekly hours could exceed 50 hours. The successful candidate is eligible for overtime at time-and-a-half.
Travel to anywhere in Michigan may be required and could result in overnight stays in hotels for several days to weeks.
This role may be subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship. Any expenses incurred as a result of projects assigned to the successful candidate after hire by WSP will be reimbursed.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Actively enrolled in an ABET accredited Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2025 or later.
Must be 18 or older.
Demonstrated interest in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
Interested in and willing to support projects involving but not limited to solid waste landfill construction, geosynthetic liner installation, geotechnical evaluations, well drilling, and geotechnical soil borings and explorations.
Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering, or related, Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2025 or later.
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD Civil 3D or other civil engineering design/modeling software
Experience with any type of construction, not necessarily Civil Engineering related, as a builder, laborer, or related.
Current 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification, or current 8-hour refresher.
Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
