Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a time limited assignment not-to-exceed 1 year(s), that may be extended within regulatory time limits or made permanent without further competition or terminated at management discretion. At the end of the assignment you will be returned to a position equivalent in tenure and grade as your former position. Responsibilities As a(n) Supervisory Hydrologist within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Eastern Data Section Management - Oversees administrative, scientific, and technical direction of the Eastern Data Section including participation with management and other teams to define water-resource problems and issues. Data collection - Provides oversight and review relevant to the collection, processing, and dissemination of hydrologic and environmental data. Supervision - Reviews and evaluates work of direct reports and ensures that work is completed safely, efficiently, and adequately. Staff support - Ensures that staff in the Section have adequate tools, information, equipment, and time to meet their mission. Cooperator maintenance - Maintains internal and external contacts and cooperative working relationships with partners and other scientist. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work assignments involve mostly office work and occasional work in the lab and field. Office assignments are generally sedentary. Occasional physical activities required in field assignments, include walking, bending, stooping, and carrying stream gaging and chemical, sediment and biological sampling equipment. Fieldwork may occasionally require lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds, wading in streams, and work in all types of extreme weather. WORK ENVIRONMENT Office assignments normally involve everyday risk or discomforts that are typical of an office and laboratory environment. Work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding. Special safety precautions are required in many cases, and the incumbent typically wears personal protective equipment including flotation devices, special safety boots, waders, masks, goggles, cold weather clothing, and reflective rain gear. Precautions will be required when working in the laboratory, since the laboratory may contain a wide variety of microbiological, physical, and chemical hazard. Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:(1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record. Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job. Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
