Phillips 66 Process Operator Entry Level, Bayway Refinery in Linden, New Jersey

The Process Operator (Assistant Operator) , Bayway Refinery works rotating shifts, which include weekends and holidays, on various units within the Bayway Refinery. These units process or produce crude oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, and other products. Some of these processes involve the use of hazardous and/or volatile materials which operate at high pressures and temperatures. The working conditions may include performing duties outside in all weather conditions, exposure to high levels of heat, noise, and vibration as well as working from heights and in confined spaces.

Assistant Operators must follow safe work practices which include wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, Assistant Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production rates. Employees in this position are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

*The anticipated start date for this position is November 2024. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

**The starting pay for this position is $39.50 per hour. Future pay changes will be determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Maintaining equipment and safe unit operation

  • Climbing ladders, tanks and towers

  • Taking samples/readings of process streams

  • Initiating or issuing work orders/permits for work related to the assigned unit

  • Serving on the refinery emergency response fire brigade

  • Communicating effectively during the shift and at shift relief regarding key process unit and equipment information

  • Following company policies and procedures and completing required training

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Must have valid driver’s license

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

  • Willing and able to perform/comply, with or without a reasonable accommodation, with the following:

  • To work at least a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes weekends and holidays, rotating between days and nights

  • To work overtime

  • To work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos

  • To work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • To climb up to 150 feet in height

  • To lift up to 50 pounds

  • To work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • To wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

  • To maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

  • To perform fire fighting duties

  • To work outside in all weather conditions

  • To work with petroleum products under high pressure and temperature conditions

  • To read and understand complex work instructions in English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Process Technology or Engineering

  • 1 or more year(s) of direct work experience in manufacturing, heavy industry (including oil & gas), public safety, and/or military

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.
