Los Alamos National Laboratory Cooling Tower/Water System Engineer in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an experienced Water Treatment subject matter expert (SME) to support the Maintenance and Site Services - Maintenance Programs (MSS-MP) group. As our selected candidate, you will have a strong mechanical background and will perform periodic inspections, evaluations, designs, and provide recommendations of water related systems at LANL. You will be deployed to MSS-MP, will be responsible for LANL's cooling towers, chillers, water circulation systems and other similar programs, and will assist the Group Lead (GL) as needed.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the duties of this position which include but are not necessarily limited to:

HVAC/Plumbing Systems

  • Advise as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on HVAC, plumbing buildings systems, cooling and heating water systems and infrastructure systems.

  • Establish design criteria for buildings and Infrastructure HVAC and plumbing systems.

  • Design, evaluate, and upgrade facility HVAC and plumbing systems.

  • Manage and interpret water analysis to provide water treatment recommendations.

Design/Analysis/Reporting

  • Apply and enforce sustainable design measures, e.g. ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, and LANL HPSB.

  • Prepare and interpret life cycle cost analyses.

  • Provide technical reviews of buildings and infrastructure systems designs from LANL and outside A/E firms.

  • Assist project engineering with writing Requirements and Criteria Documents.

  • Perform code searches, and apply DOE Orders, appropriate codes, standards and guidelines.

  • Prepare technical reports and studies.

  • Collect the requirements for the system, process, and components design or analysis task, and then prepare design concepts that meet the requirements.

  • Develop design details, design or analysis calculations, specifications, pressure safety documentation, P&IDs, etc. that incorporate the applicable design and national code requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable.

  • Communicate and push for needed projects or efforts by providing cost comparisons, data interpretation, high level schedules or other relevant documentation.

  • Support the MSS department in the review, revision and development of maintenance related documents such as Operations and Maintenance documentation (O&M), Preventive Maintenance Instructions (PMI) and other.

Safety

  • Support the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations.

  • Perform Engineering Evaluations of existing equipment and systems for performance, safety, and deficiencies.

  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of industry codes and standards, e.g. ASME, ASTM, UMC, UPC Codes and Standards.

  • Coordinate with EPC, IH, Health and Safety, Fire Protection and other to accomplish project goals.

Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to early career mechanical engineers.

  • Demonstrate the capacity to work with different vendors, contractors, and facility operations and maintenance groups to accomplish objective goals.

  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines, the Project Engineer, and the customer during the all stages of planning, design and construction.

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending upon the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineer 2 ($101,700-$168,200)

  • 3 years job experience with buildings and infrastructure including mechanical and plumbing systems; engineering work planning and design coordination; using ASME B31 family of codes (PSO Areas A certification encouraged); using Uniform Mechanical and Plumbing codes; facilities (HVAC) design experience; nuclear related HVAC design experience.

  • Experience conducting independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques; with projects in scoping, design, construction, change management, and engagement with field personnel, or a combination of these; reviewing design drawings for project development e.g. P&ID, PFD, mechanical, instrumentation and other; requesting and reviewing equipment quotes related to water analysis and water treatment; coordinating with EPC, Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection and other departments to accomplish project goals.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of International Building Code, and International Existing Building Code, International Energy Conservation Code; DOE standards applicable to non-reactor facility design, operation, and maintenance; managing system evaluation and data interpretation (water analysis) to provide water treatment recommendations; experience supporting maintenance and construction activities to ensure the project success; ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen; ability to apply critical thinking in complex problem solving, present options, and make recommendations.

  • Working knowledge of Mechanical Software, analysis tools (e.g. Matlab, Mathcad, Fathom) and proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office software suite (including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

Engineer 3 ($112,000-$186,700)

In addition to job requirements for Mechanical Engineer 3, requirements include:

  • Minimum 6 year experience in HVAC design.

  • Minimum 6 year experience in nuclear related HVAC design experience.

  • Demonstrated/recognized expertise in HVAC and/or thermal and fluid systems.

  • Demonstrate expertise with finite element analysis software to solve engineering challenges.

Education/Experience for Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience for Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity of LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE), LANL Quality policies and procedures.

  • Mechanical professional engineering license (through NCEES for any U.S. state or territory).

  • Basic Microsoft Office software Access and Visio or Primavera P6 software.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
