The Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamics Extremes Group (MST-8) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites you to join our team providing support for our National Security Mission and discover why we attract the best and brightest minds in the world. MST-8 is seeking an R&D Engineer 2 to support the Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFFF) as it transitions to an operational environment.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

The successful candidate will support a set of activities that contribute to the operational start-up of the LEFFF facility and interface with internal and external customers (thereby aligning LEFFF with the energy security mission of LANL). The candidate will be responsible for developing work documents that comply with the policies required by a radiological materials manufacturing facility. In addition, the candidate will be expected to apply principles that support the operational envelope of LEFFF, as well as productivity targets. The selected individual will assist with the development and implementation of materials processing methods for nuclear fuel fabrication in a collaborative setting with an extensive number of internal and external organizations and subject matter experts.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Demonstrated experience with radiological materials processing, quality systems and process industrialization.

• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting manufacturing challenges to meet productivity goals.

• Demonstrated experience with project management, keeping to deadlines and making deliverables.

• Ability to establish direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person, and achieve deliverables at task level.

• Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications :

• Experience with advanced materials synthesis methods and applications to nuclear fuel manufacturing.

• Knowledge of enriched material handling and safeguards, including LANMAS (Local Area Network Material Accountability System).

• Knowledge of DOE program structures (e.g., financial management systems).

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, standing for long periods of time, climbing ladders, fine motor control, lifting and carrying 20 - 30 pounds.

Work Environment : Work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, use of PPE including eye protection and respirators.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants : Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
