Los Alamos National Laboratory HPC Consultant (Scientist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The High Performance Computing Environments group (HPC-ENV) is seeking driven HPC data scientists in the very broad areas of HPC and AI/ML overlap, as a Scientist 1 or 2. The HPC Consulting team provides direct support to HPC customers to enhance the productivity of the user community by providing quality technical support. We achieve this by providing a single point of contact for HPC systems, and delivering customer-focused services, tools and software. The Team provides support for all production HPC platforms in various networks, including help for programming languages, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, debugging, parallel computing, HPC operating systems, utilities, libraries, file systems and interconnects, scripting, archival storage, file transfer, HPC network, and NNSA/DOE design agency support. The Division's goal is to create an effective HPC environment in which scientists can be as productive as possible.

The HPC Division supports the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) mission by managing a world-class supercomputing center. We support stockpile stewardship for NNSA/DOE and accelerate scientific discovery for scientists. We integrate and support some of the world's largest supercomputers during an exciting time in computing with the focus on traditional large scale simulations, data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

HPC-ENV manages how users interact with the HPC systems at LANL which helps secure the nation and pushes the boundaries of science and innovation. Several teams within HPC-ENV are responsible for the broad range of HPC platforms, programming and runtime environments, software, application optimization and readiness, software engineering, user support & services for a large and diverse customer base. We provide support and services to many production platforms at a world-class computing facility to ensure customers can accomplish their research and mission at extreme scale.

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 1 or Scientist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Responsibilities include the following:

Scientist 1 ($92,300 - $151,000)

The successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Participate in the weekly consult support schedule by solving HPC technical problems via telephone, the ticketing system, email, and in person.

  • Work independently and also collaboratively with other HPC support team members.

  • Contribute to technical documentation, presentations, and/or give tutorials in person or via online conferencing tools to classrooms, user groups, and HPC teams support teams.

  • Communicate and collaborate frequently with customers as well as cross-Group and cross-Division teams, including those at other HPC sites.

Scientist 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 2 level requires:

  • Provide in-depth application support to users.

  • Work as a technical leader to implement customer solutions to current problems and enhance our HPC user environment.

  • Provide technical direction and help to continuously improve HPC user support at LANL.

  • Represent LANL HPC Consulting at workshops, meetings, and conferences with other HPC and NNSA/DOE sites.

  • May provide technical and professional expertise to students & junior staff through mentorship and training.

  • Identify needs in our HPC environment, propose and implement solutions.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Linux Expertise - Linux knowledge and experiences, including usage and commands.

  • Programming Skills - At least 2 years experience in programming in Python, Bash, or C/C++. Experienced in basic software engineering principles.

  • HPC Computing Experience - Knowledge of High Performance Computing, their environments and supporting infrastructure. Knowledge of distributed systems, including system architectures, computer networks, software and multi-tenant.

  • Strong interpersonal - Outstanding written and oral technical communication. Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work with groups of people of various levels of technical knowledge or understanding.

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2:

  • Experience leading a technical project

  • Advanced HPC Experience - Demonstrated knowledge and experience with HPC environments, software, operating systems, parallel file systems, archives, job schedulers, and resource managers

  • Technical Training & Communication Skills - Demonstrated effective communication skills in classroom or team situations, such as making technical presentations, system documentation, user manuals, delivering HPC courses, or speaking as a representative for HPC teams/groups

  • Message Passing Experience - Familiarity with parallel processing, and parallel programming libraries, including message passing interface (MPI) and shared memory methodologies

  • Familiarity with GPU computing in a scientific computing environment

Education/Experience at lower level

Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level

Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Machine Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence programming or toolkits such as PyTorch, Tensorflow, SciPy, NLTK.

  • Familiarity with GPU computing in a scientific computing environment

  • Experience running scientific computational workflows in an HPC environment.

  • Customer Service - Recent experience in a customer service role, ticketing systems

  • HPC Debugging - Experience with tools and methods for optimization and debugging in a highly parallel environment.

  • DevOps & Software Development - Experience with DevOps and continuous integration (CI) tools.

  • Familiarity administering Open Ondemand.

  • Linux Containers - Experience with Linux containers and related concepts.

  • HPC Computing Experience - Knowledge of High Performance Computing, their environments and supporting infrastructure. Knowledge of distributed systems, including system architectures, computer networks, software and multi-tenant.

  • Clearance - Active DOE "Q" clearance and/or SCI and experience in a classified computing environment.

Work Location:

This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (60% onsite/40% offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
