Los Alamos National Laboratory Linux Server Administrator (Solutions Architect 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Solutions Architect 3 or Solutions Architect 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapons Research Services, Secure Networks and Assurance (WRS-SNA) group is looking for a creative Linux server administrator to be part of our Systems Operations (SysOps) team. Working alongside this team, the successful candidate will not only support the existing infrastructure but also help design and develop an updated infrastructure within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ALDX) and Weapons Engineering and Experiments Directorate (ALDW). This infrastructure allows scientific software weapons engineering teams to efficiently leverage modern professional software development practices and provides a platform for various weapons services used within the weapons directorate.

Solutions Architect 3 $112,000 - $186,700

In this role you will be working closely with the team designing an improved and updated infrastructure (to include virtualization and containers). Installing, configuring, and maintaining new/existing servers in a non-virtualized and virtualized infrastructure. Performing regular system and security monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes. Providing support as requested by customers and developer staff. Developing and maintaining documentation that describes system installation and configuration procedures.

Solutions Architect 4 $135,300 - $227,700

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, mentoring junior staff will be expected, as well as leading special projects and critical tasks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of modern Unix/Linux systems and server administration. Proficiency writing scripting languages such as Unix shell language (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python, Java, or similar scripting languages). Knowledge of modern Unix /Linux Configuration Management and use of tools like Puppet, Salt, Chef, Ansible or Cfengine. Experience writing end user and administrator documentation. Experience in computer security, authentication concepts, SSL, Kerberos, tcp/ip and other network protocols.

Communication: Comprehensive technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to initiate, design and lead technical efforts.

Collaboration: Strong teamworking and collaboration skills working with internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated experience working independently with minimum supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

mastery of modern Unix/Linux systems and server administration (RHEL 7, 8, and 9). Extensive experience scripting automated tasks in a Linux supported language (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python, Java, or similar scripting languages). Thorough knowledge of modern Unix /Linux Configuration Management and use of tools like Puppet, Salt, Chef, Ansible or Cfengine. Experience providing technical leadership and architectural direction for complex IT projects. Comprehensive experience with use of cyber-related tools for auditing, compliance verification, vulnerability testing, system patching, and continuous monitoring. Advanced experience mentoring students, post-docs, and junior career staff in both technical and career directions.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a minimum of 10-15 years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience deploying and supporting Linux server systems on VMware and/or Oracle VM platforms.

  • Experience and/or training in Linux Red Hat 7, 8, or 9.

  • Experience in a high availability production computing environment.

  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or other containerization technologies.

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Active DOE Q clearance

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
