Job Purpose/Overview

The Mechanical Engineer II is a critical member of the Analyzer R&D Engineering team focused on Antech’s in-house diagnostics (point-of-care) platforms. This hands-on role combines design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and optimization of repairs and servicing. Initial focus is on the Element i+ immunoassay platform with growth into design and support of a portfolio of diagnostic analyzers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive improvements to analyzer repair and servicing processes, including data review, method development, method improvement, and tooling.

  • Perform critical repairs and servicing while developing processes and streamlining documentation.

  • Manage the transfer of analyzer repairs to service teams (includes training) while serving as a liaison between R&D Engineering and a service department.

  • Develop new tooling to support analyzer manufacturing, repairs, and analysis.

  • Evaluate and improve analyzer hardware manufacturing processes and documentation, working closely with external contract manufacturers.

  • Contribute original engineering design for tools and next-generation analyzers.

  • Contribute hardware engineering expertise to analyzer engineering teams that include optical engineering, electrical engineering, and embedded software professionals.

  • Serve as a hardware engineering subject matter expert on multifunctional teams that include consumables manufacturing and biological assay development.

  • Deliver engineering work product within a stage gate design and development process.

  • Maintain and manage R&D equipment and tooling.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent technical discipline or demonstrated skill in a directly related engineering environment.

  • At least 3 years’ experience with hardware engineering, preferably with small opto-mechanical or opto-electronic devices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Motivated and self-directed at problem solving in multi-disciplinary environments.

  • Highly organized; effectively manage workflow in a busy R&D environment; help build structures and streamline processes.

  • Operate with a quality mindset, with compliance to the group’s quality management system.

  • Effective working alone and in groups.

  • Excellent hands-on skills with opto-electronic and small parts engineering, displaying attention to detail.

  • Background in computer aided design software; experience with SolidWorks preferred.

  • Familiarity with quality management systems, ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 preferred.

  • Knowledge of statistical process control in manufacturing environments preferred.

Working Conditions

The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations, and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including the use of cubicles, computers, and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, email, Microsoft Teams, and the Internet.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $84,370 - $105,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
