Agricultural Research Service Research Geneticist in Madison, Wisconsin

Summary The incumbent will be assigned to the carrot breeding and genetics program, located in the Vegetable Crop Research Unit, Madison, WI. The assignment is to establish and conduct research evaluating genomic information underlying traits influencing crop production and consumer value to assess its potential utility for crop improvement. Responsibilities Conduct GWAS, genomic prediction, and population genetic analyses with large genomic datasets and phenotypic information on economically important carrot traits with an emphasis on diseases and pests Participate in a team that is developing an expanded carrot database to catalog genomic and phenotypic information of interest for researchers. Support the application of genomic tools in breeding programs. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position requires a recent Ph.D (within the last four years) in in genetics, bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, plant breeding, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Genetics Series 0440 Individual Occupational Requirements Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Education This position has a positive education requirement.
