Agricultural Research Service Research Hydrologist/Soil Scientist in Madison, Wisconsin

Summary The incumbent is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Cranberry Genetics and Insect Management located in Madison, WI, but closely connected with the Pasture Systems and Watershed Management Research Unit in East Wareham, Massachusetts. The assigned research is to lead a national survey of edaphic, vegetative, and hydrologic characteristics of cranberry farms. Incumbent will participate as a team member in designing and planning the soil survey and performing water quality monitoring. Responsibilities Incumbent will collect and process soil, plant, and water samples from cranberry farms for analysis of physical and chemical properties. The Incumbent will be expected to develop and coordinate sampling campaigns in the states of Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Oregon, and New Jersey. Lead a national survey of edaphic, vegetative, and hydrologic characteristics of cranberry farms in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Oregon. Incumbent will conduct water quality monitoring on select cranberry farms in Wisconsin. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D in soil science, hydrology, or closely related discipline with emphasis on soil science; chemistry or closely related discipline; physical or natural science or engineering with emphasis on hydrology. The assignment requires a working knowledge of soil science. Knowledge of nutrient management practices is desired to ensure the relevance of research to growers and action agencies. Applicants must meet the basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Hydrology Series 1315 Individual Occupational Requirements Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Soil Science Series 0470 Individual Occupational Requirements Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Education This position has a positive education requirement.
