Description The Health Paraprofessional assists the school nurse in ensuring a healthy school
environment, providing quality health care to students and staff, and assisting with
minor emergencies as they occur.
A Day in the Life:
1. Demonstrates willingness and competence in providing specialized caretaking
tasks or procedures as delegable per the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
2. Assists the RN in meeting the health needs of students.
3. Assists in contacting and communicating with parents and staff in order to keep
everyone informed on the status of the student.
4. Assists the RN with health screenings and documentation to comply with district,
state, and/or federal mandates.
5. Communicates with the RN concerning staff/student health concerns.
6. Accurately documents all student/parent/staff interactions in the health record.
7. Attention to detail regarding health files maintained in a tidy, efficient,
confidential manner.
8. Monitors students as they enter/exit the nurses office for the purpose of keeping
accurate account of students.
9. Manages the health office in regard to supplies, cleanliness, posters etc. so the
nurses office can function efficiently.
10. Maintains confidentiality as appropriate in order to comply with district, state,
and federal laws.
11. Understands the schools plans for disaster preparedness.
12. Uses Universal Precautions.
13. Supervises students during non-instructional time on a need-be basis in order
to assure all students are properly supervised.
14. Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and
effective functioning of the health office/school.
Other Tasks:
1. Assists teachers and nurse in production work for the purpose of providing
support in being prepared for students.
2. Maintains bulletin boards and assists in room organization in order to provide an
aesthetically pleasing environment.
3. Attends professional development in order to gain knowledge and skills to be
more competent and qualified.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Health Para 2 5/20/14
Basic computer skills
Basic math skills
Ability to remain calm in crisis situations.
Good communication skills.
Ability to work with a diverse population.
Good critical thinking skills and ability to think quickly.

Education, Certification
CPR certified
High school diploma
First Aid certified
CNA recommended
Experience Health related field recommended
Physical Demands, Working Environment
Generally the job requires 50% sitting and 50% lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling,
stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
Fine finger dexterity used.
Attendance Requirements:
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required the the
Board of Education policies and regulations.
Reports To: Building Assistant Principal
Clearnance: Background check, drug screen, TB test
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Overtime is not permitted unless approved by employees supervisor. Otherwise,
the employee may be subject to discipline, up to, and including, dismissal.
