Position Description

Serco has a Shipyard Production Engineer role in Marinette, Wisconsin that will allow you to have influence every day. As the on-site lead you will be directing a dynamic team of SMEs, to include welding/fabrication, piping, machinery, HVAC, drawing changes, scheduling/planning and additional SMEs as the Navy’s support needs arise. (These could include testing, combat systems, electrical, outfitting, and aviation or others as needed.)

Your role will include conducting daily oversight and surveys of conditions found at FMM Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, receiving reports from each SME and developing both weekly and monthly reports to the lead Production Support Manager. You will also brief SUPSHIP leadership or the FFG Program Office Production Group (PMS-515P) as needed to report any significant conditions found or observed trends that could affect cost, quality, or schedule. This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret level clearance post-employment.

Serco supports the US Navy as a prime for providing engineering and production support on the FFG-62 (Guided Missile Frigate) program. In this role, you will be responsible for managing a skilled group of production engineers and waterfront technicians at the shipbuilder’s facility and with a mission to improve the efficiency and quality of the shipyard’s processes and to deliver a safe and reliable ship that meets all Navy the requirements. You will also monitor subordinate personnel adherence to Serco policy and procedures during their daily activities.

You will lead an eight-twelve-member Serco team that works closely with PMS 515, the local SUPSHIP office and other support teams to provide field engineering and production support in construction, testing, and delivery of the Navy’s latest Frigate design. The size of the onsite team will increase as additional ships are constructed or as the Navy requests specific SME support beyond areas already covered. Our production engineering team conducts 3D model and 2D drawing reviews and our on-site team will provide oversight in the areas of fabrication of panels and modules, accuracy control of individual panels and modules and alignment. Additional areas of current oversight include piping, machinery, electrical & scheduling, with more SMEs to be added as production activity warrants. Our Navy customer relies heavily on each individual’s skillset to provide support to the program office team as well as Supship and the shipbuilder’s team, all sharing a common goal to successfully build, test and deliver multiple FFGs to the next generation of sailors.

In this role you will supervise the onsite team of SMEs to perform the following actions in monitoring and supporting the ship’s construction process:

• Conduct daily walk-throughs of the various shops fabricating deck panels, bulkheads and other structural components or sub-assemblies to validate general compliance with drawings and specification requirements, including alignment of scantlings IWO module connection points.

• Confirm standard accuracy control processes are being followed for jig and fixture installations, temporary blocking for modules or submodules.

• Confirm standard etching or markings are applied to provide necessary information for shipfitters and welders to position and orient structural members, including frame, buttock, waterlines, and molded lines and also verify weld types and sizes are provided.

• Monitor piping, electrical, outfitting, care & protection of materials & equipment, preventative maintenance & fire prevention work activities for both compliance with requirements & progress to schedule.

• Review shipyard-submitted master schedules and related CDRLs for anomalies such as missing activities, misaligned or missing predecessor/successor activities and any other schedule items that would indicate reportable discrepancies or omissions.

• Participate in scheduled meetings with SUPSHIP, shipyard personnel and subcontractors, providing inputs when needed.

• Observe overall quality of fabrication and welding work and report any conditions found.

• Observe material handling, rigging and transport practices for safe methods and processes and report any issues/concerns.

• Develop and submit weekly reports of activities, including conditions found by the onsite production team and any anomalies or concerns observed during shipyard walk-throughs to the lead Production Support Manager.

• Develop and submit monthly reports of all completed activities to the lead production engineer.

• Provide support to the local Supship team as needed and also respond to emergent requests for information or data from PMS 515P (FFG Production Team, Washington Navy Yard).

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Eight to ten years experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine or Mechanical Engineering; or substitute ten years of ship production support, including any U.S. Navy shipbuilding or repair oversight experience.

• Must be able to obtain an active DoD Secret clearance post-employment.

• Experience working in a shipyard production environment and in a supervisory role.

• Ability to lead and manage a diverse group of individuals to form a synergistic team and to handle a fast-paced environment with a variety of technical and management challenges.

• Experience in quality control, surveying, and accuracy control in a shipbuilding environment.

• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint.

• Excellent oral and technical report writing skills.

• Up to 10% travel required for this position.

Additional desired experience and skills:

• Experience in AutoCAD, 3D modeling (Navisworks, Ship Constructor), numerical control programming, lofting, and nesting.

• Experience in heavy lift, module roll-over and transport operations.

• Experience in ship blocking, launching and dry-dock operations.

• Five to ten years of heavy steel fabrication and welding experience.
